please can anybody throw some light on this problem it's the second time it has occurred with me and i don't have a clue how it started or how to cure it.

if i type in an E-Mail address the moment i get to the "at" key(i can not type it now) it closes my browser, all other keys work perfectly but this one.

i got this a few weeks ago and no one could help, in the end i used system restore but then had to re-install some programs, i am pleading with you to help me just understand what the hell is going on and if i can avoid restore that would be great.

    this was the previous post

If system restore got you back to normal but reinstallation of your programs brought it back, then one of your programs is either corrupt or infected. Have you tried scanning these programs (etc.) with a spyware app? Like A-Squared free or one of the many online scanners.

A temporary solution could be to copy and paste it when you need it. Just make a text file on your desktop with the @ in it so you can copy it.

What Browser are you using? Possibly a reinstall of your browser could solve it. Make sure to save your bookmarks to a safe spot and uninstall the browser, delete any leftover folders, run CCleaner (both cleaner and reg tools), then reinstall your browser.
Do you use any programs that use shortcut keys or does your browser allow you to use them, Bill? Possibly one got mis-set.
I would also check with the guys in malware to find out if this could be some kind of prank code thing.

HON yep thats just what i have done for the moment

Muskie it dosen't matter it the same with all browsers FF/IE7

Appzalien it did not come back when i re-installed the programs all was well for a while and it just seemed to start acting up without any justification so maybe its an update or some thing that caused it???

All i can do is ask if anybody has an idea no matter how silly i will try it

Bill what keyboard language do you use and what is the exact key combination to get an @ symbol.

On U.S. keyboard it is SHIFT +2. My understanding is on your keyboard it is ALTGR +2 (is this correct?) which is apparently equivalent to ALT +Ctrl +2 on a U.S. keyboard.

it's an AZERTY board the input laguage is English but the keyboard language is Belgian Point and the combination in ALT GR +2
this has been the case with my laptop for two years and only has this become a problem

Does ALT GR +F4 also close your browser?

I don't know if anyone is still looking at this but a bit more info.

i have noticed that if i use the ALT GR+2 it does not matter if i am only showing desktop it will start a process just the same as closing the browser, it will re-start desktop and when it comes back on i have lost all my startup icons in the taskbar except my AntiVirus ,and for some strange reason my ram saver but all other are gone it also changes the format for my taskbar clock from 24 to 12 hour.

I'm back. Try opening Notepad then Start>Accesories>Accessibility>On Screen Keyboard, if you click the ALT GR key does the display change the 2 key to @. If so, does clicking the @ type one in Notepad?

    *********
I still think a program with an ALT CTRL 2 shortcut has disabled your ALT GR +2 sequence. Maybe an update.

It has the exact same effect as useing the normal keyboard it just reloads desktop

When you hit Alt GR (on screen keyboard) does the 2 change to the @ symbol?

It's a long slow job but i am checking every thing i have 41 in startup alone so one by one i am eliminating them and as no one has managed to come up with another solution its the only way to go, the problem is each time i try and fail i have to re-boot to get back to square one

well it would seem i have found the problem but not the solution?

the program that gave me all this grief was my printer updating the software,it's an HP 4100 All in one i have had it a while but it has only now decided it needs updates (why it worked perfectly before?) so all i can do for the moment is disable the auto update function and have a chat with HP, I will keep you posted if i get any sensible replies?????????

thanks to all who tried and to all who thought about trying

You might look for a shortcut key in the software <Alt> <Ctrl> +2 and try and change it. That is probably the conflict.

You an disable the HP auto update permanently. I never let programs auto update. My printer hasn't been updated and it still works. Most of the time HP wants to download more bells and whistles which aren't needed for the functioning of the printer.
