Personally I like all the Battlefield games mainly because you can drive the vehicles.
The Desert Combat Mod for this game is particularly cool, Buzzing around in an Abrams tank and all.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is good and Free, big download though

Still like playing Freelancer also, though not really a FPS

I'm not sure of the exact link for Delta Force Black Hawk Down. Search NovaWorld or NovaLogic...(one of them is right) and you will find some demos there (including black hawk down)...if you Google Search Delta Force Black Hawk Down Demo you should find it!! (a download).

I've just started playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein, i love it!
Battlefield seems to be a pretty popular choice aswell so I might have a look at that aswell.

America's Army, good gameplay and it's free, not to mention you don't have to worry about buggy patches that are never fixed and no dumbass expansions every month (i.e: Battlefield 2).

It is dumb, in the sense that those expansions are just EA's way milking money out of everyone. It's annoying to know that EA is the only one making these kind of games and they screw them up and screw other people with this crap that they market.

The game wouldn't be so bad if they put half as much effort into the patches as they did the expansions and at least attempted to fix some of the gameplay issues that have stood since release. In my opinion EA made games are horrible and EA doesn't deserve the money they get, if it wasn't for the license they put on the NFL for Madden they wouldn't see a dime of my money, but hey Madden is horrible as well but it's the only Football game available.

They release expansions so people will play them, not to milk money out of anyone. Its all up to user preference, so they are not forcing anyone to buy them. Its no ones fault that no other game maker offers expansions, so if people want an expansion, they will look into EA.

I have downloaded some of the latest patches and IMO there are no problems from the patches. Although there might be, its very minimal. As for NFL, I personally like the game, offers great gameplay. If you dont like it, you can look into the NCAA series.

Well yeah obviously to play it is the first thing, secondly in my opinion that's all EA does. Milking peoples money is EA's specialty, there is no reason to release an expansion back to back in a 1-2 month time frame, they do the same thing with the Sims, sure the user that can afford it won't care, us people who actually see it as a blessing to be able to afford a game from time to time find it annoying, because when you get a game like that every time you turn around they release something new.

Point being they put more effort into the things that will take your money than putting forth the effort in actually fixing gameplay issues or creating something completely new. As for NCAA series, no thanks, i'm not a fan of college football and EA makes it so no thanks. Obviously when 2K Sports has out done EA since they're rise in the industry, it would have been interesting to see how badly NFL 2K7 would out sell and out rate Madden on any scale.
