    Hi all.
I need a very light weight defrag. program for my elderly computer as I still like to do a lot of work on it. It is very limited in space. Hoping for a suggestion.
Piriform defraggler isn't working on my machine so have to find something else.
    Thanks a lot.

Wiley, Just realized I'd tried to download this earlier. It requires 27 MB's of space in addition to the initial 6 something MB. That doesn't seem all that lightweight to me. This is for my elderly computer that I still like to use for many things.

How much room do you have total.

windows Xp has it's own defrager.

If you don't have enough free space on your hard drive for the defragmenter to be able to move file fragments around and reassemble them into one contiguous file, NONE of them will work (even XP's built-in one). You need to offload files from your System drive on to another drive to free up space. Also, use something like CCleaner to remove junk like temporary files which will also free up some additional space. IOBit's Smart Defrag is an excellent choice for the job it does but make sure to do a custom install to opt out of any bundleware it may contain.

how big is your hard drive and how much space have you got left as I would think you will need to get a bigger hard drive which are now cheap to buy

First grab portable CCleaner and put it on a USB stick and clean out some space.
    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
    2nd one on that page.

Next grab a portable defragger, like this

and run it from a USB stick.

I actually carry this on a stick

when I work on cleaning senior citizens' computers.

Since there are quite a few portable defraggers, download and test them out and see which you like.

I wish to thank everyone for your excellent suggestions.
To answer some of the questions about space, I have 25.1013 GB of free space, and 12.166 GB's of used space. So to address some of the concerns as to whether I have enough space to run a defrag: well, I don't know anything; so do I? :-D
I have downloaded MyDefrag because it seemed lighter than others; because MG has it on its top download list, and because some of you recommended it.
It is way way above my skill level. It doesn't have the little colored blocks that my piriform defrag. had. So satisfying to see them become lined up and organized; you had a visual of how things were with your files. This one has a kinda of map, but no guide as to what the colors mean. The map is a bluish thing with yellow streaks, makes no sense to me. The program gives an option as to whether one wants scripts. I barely know what a script is but included those as I hoped I might learn something.
The program seemed to be doing a lot as it worked. I got the idea that it might be setting things right. It spoke of zones and gaps and moved lots of things about, alot of things were moved to something called lcn. At the end of a long time it said there were no fragments. My piriform defrag could no longer defraq all fragments, had to uninstall tho it worked well for a long time.
If MyDefrag has a manual that discloses its mysteries, and secret map color codes, I can't find it.
Maybe someone could shed some light?
Again, so grateful for all the helpful replies.

That's good. Rule of thumb is to have about 15% to 20% of a hard drive free. Your hd totals about 47.2GB and 12.2 is free; that's more than 25% so you are good to go.

I don't think I've ever used Mydefrag. Ah, I used the old versions JKDefrag back when I was running Windows 2000. I can't help with the new version.

I run a portable version of Ultradefrag on my netbook and it has colored blocks.

so you might want to kick the tires on this one too.

Again, you don't need to defrag very often.
