... to Microsoft's decision NOT to allow Comments to be loaded against nearly every type of File.

Doc, msi and jpeg files being some of the exceptions. ( 2 of the 3 allowed are MS property). Up to XP was fine, but Vista and Win 7 are excluded.

I download lots of *.exe and *.zip files (from MG, of course) to try out eventually, and some of the names bear no resemblance to the program I am interested in.

Just today I downloaded, as an example, Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) 2.0 Beta Build 1.9.0.3007, from http://majorgeeks.com/Secunia_Personal_Software_Inspector_PSI_d6030.html
and the file was called " PSI2SetupBeta.exe".

I added Secunia in front of their File name to give me some hope of remembering what it is/was about.

The only workaround I can think of is to start an Excel Spreadsheet with Original program name, Download name and basic Comments (probably taken from the MG basic description as shown in www.majorgeeks.com listing ).

    Anyone else got another/better/simpler idea?

    I need suggestions/help, thanks.

    Sorry. Couldn't pass that up.
But seriously, that is pretty much the method I use, only with Index cards.
And I also include a brief description of the program.
Just for the ones I use or have used.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Yeah, I miss the old comments section - came in real handy.

Mainly, I just rename everything - I hide extensions for known file types in Explorer, so I don't screw up the typing of the .exes, .zips, etc. - I usually type in the download date, however (e.g., "avastDefs13Sep10") to differentiate between like files.

Maybe try an alternative to Explorer, like xplorer2 lite from zabkat? I don't know if it will allow "comments" in 7 or not, it does in XP but I've not tried it on 7. One of the interesting things about "xplorer2 lite" is, it will allow you to "Copy columns" of the selected files which you can then paste into a spreadsheet.

I put the exe in a directory (folder) and put the name of the program as the directory name. I also create a text file with info (like if I installed it and the date I downloaded it, version, etc.) and put this inside the folder with the exe file, properly named to the name of the file.
On my 2K boxes, I have a small program that used to be free called Explorer Notes http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,5860,00.asp
It adds a right click menu and a box where I can put notes. The program appears with a red paperclip so I know I have a note added.

Thanks for all the ideas, folks. :major :cool

It gives me some hope of finding a method/program that will allow me to add Comments ( that I really miss ).
