I'm running Vista and had an error so I ran the ChkDsk Utility.

It says it can't repair the error - no biggie. But now the utility won't stop running. Whether I restart within the utility or do a system restore to an earlier point in time, it just won't stop!!! GRRRRRRRRR

    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure about Vista, but with XP you'd open up the boot.ini file and edit out the option to run chkdsk every time at boot. Click Start, and run msconfig. Click the 'Boot' tab and see if something there stands out, or post a screen shot here of the 'Boot' tab and we'll try to help. Also, check out this article and see if anything of use is mentioned; it's a very informative article about the Vista boot structure/boot loader and should be helpful.... good luck, and keep us posted!

dlb - Thanks, but I can't even get to the start button. It's perpetually stuck in chkdsk. When I bypass it to go into the start options and choose start normally or in safe mode, it only restarts up the chkdsk again.

    Thoughts?

Vista does not have a boot.ini file.

1)Check the disk with the manufacturers own test utility, generally available here.

    2) If checks OK use the Vista DVD to boot to 'system repair' (not system restore) and let it do just that.

Ok - any idea how to find out who my manufacturer is since I can't get in to the computer to look?

I have a Dell - looked through the material can't see anywhere that is says if they or someone else are the actual manufacturer.

Do you have the Dell recovery DVD?

Run chkdsk c: /r and then reboot and let the scan finish.

Yeah- I knew that... I was just mentioning how to deal with a similar problem if it was XP. The intention was to hopefully find something similar for Vista. :( Apparently there isn't anything similar. If you need the hard drive manufacturer, look in the system BIOS (press F2 right when you power up) and look at the list of drives. You should see a model number; do a Google search for that number and it will reveal who made the drive. Here's a quick guide; the first letters can tell you who made the drive: ST is Seagate; HT or IC is Hitachi/IBM; WD is Western Digital. Then go to the drive maker's web site and download their diagnostic tool to make sure the drive is OK. Da Chicken's advice is good too; boot to the recovery console, run a full chkdsk from there using the command he listed, let it finish, then type 'exit' to reboot. If chkdsk starts again, just let it finish....

Vista doesn't have a recovery console either. The equivalent in Vista is called by running bootrec.exe.

You can call this by booting from the Vista DVD (Dell call it the Dell OS disk). At the bottom of the screen which says Install now you will find an option

    Repair your computer

    choose this

The next screen offers various options. I suggested the first one

    "startup repair", whcih is automated.

Alternatively you can get to a Dos like prompt by choosing the last option

    "command prompt"

But remember that some Dos commands have changed in Vista.

    typein the following

    chkdsk c: /f /c /i

This will limit Check disk activity and help it complete.

You can fully fix the problem later once you have regained your pc.
