maybe this is a dumb thing to ask but is there anyway someone could be there own isp for there own personel use? if you can how would someone go around makeing there own internet connection? i am taking about a legit way have a real ip real connection and so on because i am just getting tired of having to pay$30 for 56k dialup and only connect at max 36k. hell if i could or knew how i would start my own ISP for this area offering wireless or wired dsl (doing alittle brain storming my lead nowhere lol) so how would i beable to bring that type of speed out to the middle of nowhere could i use some type of long range routers? so thin i would be able to offer my own type of internet to other people that live this far out of this town and other towns alike? (lost my train of thought of well) well would any of this be possable? for someone to start there own high speed internet service to serve the people that are other wise unable to to get high speed from other people. by useing long range routers and and such? thanks for reading and i did say at the start this may sound dumb lolhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

It's sort of hard to explain everything, but the basic way the internet works is someone buys access and shares it off. In otherwords your ISP is buying bandwidth from a diffrent bigger company and then redistributing it to their clients. Your ISP doesn't have some sort of magical connection which hooks them into the internet, there just buying access like you are. The diffrence is they usually have to handle running there own wires and they buy a heck of a lot more then you'd buy.

Anyways that being said there is nothing stopping you from buying high speed from somone like telus and then redistributing it yourself, thus making you a mini ISP. It's actually become quite popular in my area and I know a few people who have done this.

Most long range networking devices are really expensive. Although recently prices have come down a bit. You can now buy some microwave NIC's that have a max run distance of roughly 20KM, of course they require line of sight to work(they can go through houses but not dirt). The NIC's themselves run about $200 (all prices are in canadian dollars since I don't know the US amounts off the top of my head), you'd also need to by a few other things plus an antenna and such. But over all you can setup a two way connection for just under $1000. Which is about as cheap as you're goigg to manage right now.

So if you really want to be an ISP simply find a place within 20KM of you were you can get high speed, send it out to yourself and redistribute, if people are close you may be able to share to them using standard wireless technologies. If not you'd have to keep buying microwave nic's and setting it up, meaning each person would have to pay roughly a grand as a setup fee.

If you can't get high speed internet within 20KM of your area then you're basicly SOL unless you're willing to pay thousands (possible hundred of thousands) to get some wires run out to you.

It depends on your area and how much time you have to put into this, but satellite could be an option. You could always redistribute the satellite internet (of course you'd need dual direction, not just down with the phone line up). Satellite is expensive but if you can find 10 or so people in your area and split the cost up by sharing it with them it might end up being viable, heck if you can find more it might even end up being cheaper then your dialup.

Of course the setup would be a pain and you'd still most likely have to use microwave NIC's to redestribute so it would take quite a bit of planning.
