well we're moving to a new house which has a very sweet office and I figure it would be nice to build a nice new(ish) win 7 work pc for my parents and bro. and if they don't want it then it would be a good replacement for free pc

my budget (believe it or not) is around $100

I really want to build an AMD and ATI system

So far I found a server board with dual 940 slots and some pretty cheap dual core AMD opterons. (faux quad core)

I'm not bad with pc's, but I don't know if I can use a server board to build a home office computer

    will it have sound?
will a hp/compaq D510 minitower case fit such a board?
will I need special hardware such as the power supply and ram?
will the cpu's need a heatsink and fan? (judging by the pic there is nothing to mount those to)
also will this save power? (not important, but opteron brags about it)
    will it be quiet?

    thanks for your time,
    -Tyler

this is only an idea right now though, nothing serious until january

doesn't look like it has a sound card
You need a EATX case for it. a MictoATX case won't fit it.
The board needs older DDR ram which is expensive due to it's age. Looks like this board needs ECC ram which is more expensive.
Yes CPU's must have a heat-sink and fan or else it will cause damage to the CPU.
I think this would eat alot of power.
Quiet depends on the fan noise.

$100 is WAY to low. I say a min of 400 to build a decent system. Going older tech like this can cost more the long run.

well then what about an AM2+ mobo?

an Athlon x2 seems to be more power than is needed to run win 7 smoothly

and 2 gigs of ram should be enough to run a few applications quickly and at the same time

what would you recommend that's cheap and not intel?

    What is your max budget?

my very max is about $150

weak I know, but I already have 2 IDE hard drives (80 gb combined, but we have a 1tb external drive), a monitor, keyboard, and mouse

all I really need is a mobo, cpu and memory

this compy will be called cheap pc (like free pc, only some money is spent)

got the ok from my parents, they in fact really like the idea of cheap pc.
the fastest comp in the house right now is my 2.8 ghz p4 free pc so they like the idea of an upgrade

You need a power supply as well.

forgot to mention that there's already one in the d510 minitower case

    sorry about that
