Can I convert ethernet to phone line?

We currently have an ethernet cable supplying our internet. We also have an older computer with a phone jack on the back. Can I convert the male ethernet connector to a male phone connector and get the internet on the older computer? Thanks. Ed.

 

Forgot to mention there is also a usb port on the older computer.

 

plodr...thanks. I don't mind opening the computer. I've added cards and memory several times. Is there anything else I have to know before adding the card, or will this one work? Thanks. Ed

Pardon the intrusion, but a quick thought: many modems/routers come with a USB output option as well as RJ45. Might be worth checking...

If not, then agreed with plodr - a cheap, simple NIC card (probably PCI) is easy to install and set up. Make sure it's compatible with the machine's Windows OS.

 

Even if usb is an option, your better served with an ethernet card. USB nics in my experience as an isp tech have been flaky and problem filled more so then a regular network card.

 

Thanks all. Caliban, There is no usb output on the router, but thanks for the suggestion, and will make sure the card is compat with the OS.

Colemanguy, thanks for the confirmation on the ethernet card. Def sounds like the better way to go.
