Can I Delete This?

I have performed a Forum search for this, but the archived thread did not finally answer the question . . .

I am running WinXP Home SP2 (fully updated), and I have a strange NEW file extension that I have never seen before. I was running Windows disk defrag like I have almost daily for years, but instead of the usual "finished" dialog box there was something else:

"Windows was unable to defragment the following file: C0970864.wip"

The extension is a Windows Installer Package file, NOT a Visual Studio file. This file suddenly appeared today, and I have never, ever seen this before (I'm not an expert, but not exactly a novice either). It seems like there was an install gone badly or something. Also, it occupies almost 1GB of HD space. It obviously needs to go away.

Can I delete this? Has anyone seen this before?

    Good questions.

If you have installed SP2 RC1 just before this happened then it could well be the backup copy of your OS just incase you want to uninstall SP2! @ 1gb its size is about that of a backup of the windows OS.
