Can I do this with a H/D and Raid 1?

Hi all, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge and hope I explain this clearly. I have a Dell with Vista which has a 100 gig H/D as well as a Raid 1. If I want to swap out the primary drive for a new, larger one, probably a 500gb, will the raid disk automatically reinstall all my programs, settings etc. so that I do not lose anything? Also will the Raid 1 drive continue to mirror my main drive even though it is bigger than the original? Thanks in advance!

Your RAID array will automatically reformat the new drive to have a partition the same size as the old drive.

What I suggest you do is to buy a pair of new drives, swap one in for an old one, let the RAID array rebuild the new drive, then remove the second old drive. Then extend the partition on the new drive, or put another partition on, whatever you want to do, then plug in the new drive and let it rebuild.

Please note I cannot be held responsible for any data loss, hard drive corruption, time wasted, monies spent, hair loss enchountered, dead goldfish, lack of electricity or nuclear war caused by your following of these suggestions. All rights reserved. Please shut the door on the way out.
