Can I get a new bios for my Dell Dimension E310?

I want to overclock my old Dell Dimension E310 but my system bios won't let me, the cpu clock speed is off limits.

I use this machine for some serious video editing and affects insertion and run it for hours at a time--that's the main reason I don't use my laptop for this...heat problems.

I've changed my old machine up a bit and here are the specs:

NVIDIA GeForce Fx5500 video card--slightly overclocked using Cool Bits 2.0 and the NVIDIA control Panel and with a larger heat sink and new fan I scavanged off an older pc; 2 GB of RAM; new side mounted case fan. I'm not sure about my motherboard type but the chipset is IntelĀ® 915GV Express I believe.

Thins is, I am using a effects program called Particle Illusion now and it needs more speed...

I've tried Riva Tuner but it won't allow the changes to my cpu clock because they have been disallowed through my system bios--I tried that first.

Any help here would really really be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Without know the exact make and model of motherboard, we really can't find another BIOS for you. Dell doesn't make their own boards, so the Dell model doesn't help. Chances are, it's an Intel brand board, made exclusively for Dell, and you're probably not going to find any non-Dell BIOS that will work. Dell is funny that way; they don't want anyone mucking about with their stuff without their implicit approval. Why not buy a faster CPU, or if funding allows, invest in a higher end complete system to dedicate to video. Video processing should really be done on fairly high end gear for the best results in the least amount of time. I used to run an AMD Duron 1.8ghz and it could encode a full DVD movie to AVI DivX format in about 3 hours (with 1.5gb DDR333 RAM). I now have a dual core AMD64 5400+ with 3gb DDR2-667. That time has gone from over 3 hours to under 45 minutes.....

Hey dlb, I want to thank you for the quick response.

Yeah, I've found out a lot about Dell and their "proprietary" hardware. This stuff blocks every third-party program I've tried NTune by NVIDIA, Riva Tuner, Speed Fan...

But I have found a program called CPUFSB that says it can override any board type, but, I need to find out the exact make and manufacturer of my motherboard--I looked using CPU-Z and it only says Dell..? That doesn't help me much. *There's even a program called softFSB made for older machines like mine that goes through Windows to change the FSB speed...but...I need to know the make and manufacturer of my board*

I went to the Dell Help Forums and posted my pc make, model and service tag and asked for the exact mobo type and manufacturer...so I'll see what they say. But you are right Dell sure is funny about this stuff; I even told them "I don't acre about warranty or anything, this is my machine, let me do what I want to it," and they said they'd "Get back to me"...sheesh.

This pc actually renders pretty quickly: I use Sony Vegas Pro 8.0(b), DVD Architect 5.0, and Particle Illusion to create custom movies for customers and I can render a full-length DVD with menu, effects and all in under 45 minutes. It can even play Halo CE with absolutely no lag if I max out my card settings...

But, I want my cpu to run just a bit faster so I don't have to max out my card all the time.

My budget is pretty tight right now, I work as an off-shore welder but I have a 6 foot tall girlfriend and a 2005 Roush Mustang that only gets like 23 miles per gallon so, I basically never have any money for myself--but it's cool because I love both my girls and they deserve to be treated well.

Would a better cpu get it done?

Here's what CPU-Z says about my pc:

    Processor, Intel Pentium 4 521,
    Code name, Prescott
    Socket, 775 LGA
    Technology, 90nm
Specification, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz

    Motherboard, Dell
    Model, 0JC747

    Chipset, Intel i915P/i915G
    Southbridge, Intel 82801FB(ICH6)

So, basically, I want to run this pc for as long as I can--as hard as I can--before building my new rig...believe me, I won't ever buy another Dell....

    Thanks again.

I just got this from a Dell guy:

    rossmart34

It's a Dell BTX Micro motherboard, based on the Intel 915GV chipset, made to Dell's proprietary specifications by Foxconn.
