New computer coming soon but thought I might let the kids use the old one. Can I get windows 98SE running safe? 98 was the original OS on the computer. Can I get updates for it somewhere. Microsoft don't support it anymore, but maybe I can get the latest files and updates for it somewhere else. Or is it just going to be not very safe surfing?

When booting up the computer, F8 will need to be pressed. Once the "menu" selection window appears, choose Safe Mode.

Ops, should have read a little more. Assumed you said "safe mode". Sorry. :(

Unfortunately, probably not too well. The av programs, malware detectors, trojan detectors for the most part do not support any OS below windows 2000. I think Avast is one of the few that still supports 98

Yes. I found this on the Avast website
If you have broadband, make sure it is hard wired to the router so at least you have firewall protection. You are stuck running IE6, which does have security vulnerabilities. MS is still patching IE6 for those of us running windows 2K and unable to move up to IE 7. I'm trying to see what version of Firefox will run on 98. You may want to install that instead of running IE6 all the time.
    I believe v2 will work on 98.
    Here are all the versions

Some 3rd party patches are available from. Book mark Axcel's huge site

    He has patches for 98.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking that it may be a bit hard to get up to date AV etc. for 98. I will check out the things you have suggested.

I have been running XP pro that a friend installed a long time ago but with my research for my new computer I have since found out that it has an invalid key and hasn't been updating. :cry That is probably why I have been having virus troubles etc.

I have the original key and OEM CDs for 98 so I thought I might just delete the XP part of my dual boot computer and then try to get 98 running faster and leaner. I liked XP but it is probably just going to cause problems as it is.

    Oh well, there are a few good things about getting my new computer;

    - I will have a perfectly legal OS (windows 7)
    - I have been doing lots of research which has opened my eyes to security threats
    - I have been learning lots
    - I have found a great site where I will be able to get help in the future so I can stay clean, lean and have a fighting machine

    :-D

I might look into maybe getting a cheap, older laptop with XP or Vista on it. I'm in Japan and if it is not the latest and greatest then the prices come down. But still a bit more expensive than just using the old computer and it will have a Japanese OS.

I'll have a go working with 98 and see how things go.

    Thanks all,for the advice.

    Happy New Year!:celebrate
