First off i just wanna say sorry to anyone who may be waiting for a reply off me (in thread or PM).

My RL has been a whole world of hectic stress these last few days :(

    Onto my issue...

Quite simply, can i use ANY laptop power supply if the plug fits and the Voltage and Ampage is the same (i believe it is also ok if the amps are higher on the power, as the device will only draw what it needs, but the one in question is the same)

I know this is right for MP3 Players and Mobiles etc, but are lappys the same?
(Im thinking they could be more temperamental/breakable)

I've just got this horrible feeling i will hear a pop and the laptop will die :(

    HALPZ!

Hello, ~Q~, I really don't know for sure, but if the Voltage & Ampage is the same, it should work.... If I were you, I would wait for Mimsy, and see what she says, as Hardware is her expertise...

It does sound quite logical, but BEFORE you plug anything in, let me see if I can find you someone who knows more about Lappy's than me, OK? ;)

Not really into that part, but I would feel that, if the connections and power amounts are right, that it would work.
My concern would be if it would fit into the space available.

    Theoretically, yes it should work.

Hi hrlow, thanks for the reply.

Just to clarify: im talking about the power lead thingymabob like this one (except mine is UK connections) http://www.laptopshop.co.uk/news/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/laptop-power-lead.jpg

And the lil plug fits snug and tight into the socket on the side of the lappy.

EDIT: Ok i've just found a Hewlett Packard charger (compaq is HP isn't it?) that has the same Voltage (19v) and Amps (3.16a) and the same plug.

That has got be safe hasn't it?

If it matches and converter box puts out what is required, go for it.
Was thinking internal at first.Use boxes interchangably on cell phones all the time.Should be OK.

Yeah i use all different chargers to charge my MP3's, but ther is just something niggling at me saying dont do it when i go to switch it on, and i hate going against my instincts!

I think i need a bit more reassurance and a few more beers!
(the van threw a piston yesterday so im taking advantage of the not being able to work or drive by getting drunk at 2AM :D)

    Hi Q,

just an addendum for future reference; check for polarity (much of the generic stuff has switchable polarity) also, watch out for the tip-length with the generic adapters, if it ain't quite hiding the metal when inserted into the laptop, don't force it - you may only be breaking the power connector on the 'board ... you said yours was snug so you should be ok :)

My tip for tomorrow - a shot of white wine, orange juice, honey and ginger in a tall glass topped up with fizzy/soda water, use it to chase down a couple of paracetamol and keep clear of driving and coffee until late afternoon ^_^

Nice to Know it worked out for you. I'm in the same kinda soup :-D

With the good old Lenovo R52 (battery already @ a total 30% recharge capacity!!)
Well the Ac adapter does not seem to charge or boot the LT with out the 6cell
battery!! Did not have a Multi -meter on hand to check.

Even as I type the LT is on it's way to try a generic adapter. Will know in another twenty mins.
In your words, I hope it "POPS" (the lappy)
Need to get a new one. :-D (already know what to pick)
    Cheers...
