Go to Dell's website and check whether the Inspiron 530 supports Windows XP.

Suspect Eldon means Win 7 or Win 10, not XP.

Thank you for your responses. Microsoft suggested Window 10 Home version, which I will probably purchase. My question to the rep was , do I need to uninstall XP, unfortunately for me he didnt know. Just want to make sure before I spend the $100 .

    Thank you.

Since Windows XP can't be upgraded directly to Windows 10, you will need to back up any data that you want to save from Windows XP to an external drive, and then do a "clean install" of Windows 10. The Windows 10 that you purchase should come with either a USB flash drive or a DVD. Once the flash drive or the DVD is inserted into your computer, reboot your computer and press F12 when you see the Dell logo appear (you might have to press F12 multiple times until you hear a "beep" from the computer), this should bring up the boot menu where you'll be able to use your arrow keys to select either the DVD drive or the flash drive to boot from. Then, just follow the directions in the link Eldon posted starting at the section labeled "How to Get Installation Media and Do a Clean Install of Windows 10". Since you'll already have the installation media, you can skip to the section where it starts with "On the Windows Setup screen, select your language, time and currency format, and keyboard layout. Click “Next” to continue.".

I only see drivers for XP and Vista for the Dell 530s.

Plus it is an 11 year old PC.

If it were me, I'd save the $100 and keep saving for a new system rather than spending the money on an 11 year old PC that might not have drivers for Win 10. That would mean, video is bad, no sound and possibly no way to get on the internet until you buy a card or buy a USB wifi dongle.

  10. I agree with plodr, even if you manage to get Windows 10 on the PC how efficient is it going to run. You might have to do hardware upgrades to get it to run smooth as well. When a client wants there old PC to run Windows 10 I always tell them to just but a new computer, NewEgg has great deals on computers. But some insist they want to keep their computer, and I tell them they need more RAM and an SSD hardware to see any substantial performance increase. SSD are getting cheaper each year. But the biggest expense is most older computers take DDR2 which the bigger sticks aren't cheap. So I would consider your options. I would buy a new(er) computer. NewEgg provides warranties for refurbished computers which is a great option for people that don't want to spend a whole lot on a computer. It New Egg provide a customizable select of hardware and features. Hope this helps.
