Can I upgrade MB & NOT reinstall XP

Is it possible to upgrade a motherboard ( and other stuff) from a Socket 478 to an LGA 775 without doing a clean install of XP? I can't bear having to reinstall all these programs in the registry and dragging out the disk to do the reinstall.

 

you can try it, but its not recommend as you geting lingering traces of old motherboard stuff and hardware. Its really a bad idea.

 

also, since your reinstalling your motherboard and CPU you'll probably get too many No votes to use WinXp without calling into Microsoft to reactivate it, in less you have like two PCI nics.

 

2 NICS has nothing to do with it. reactivation is required if you change more then three of a list of certain components, which escapes me at the moment. But its not an issue if its a legit copy anyhow because they will just reactivate it over the phone. You can do a safe reload of XP 'over the top' of itself and you'll still have all your data, programs, and settings intact. But, you will need to re-activate with Microsoft (not a big deal) and there's a chance the PC will not run as fast as it could due to lingering leftovers from the older hardware....
