lately my computer has started to slow down considerably while watching movies that i downloaded. i've tried divx codecs and players, win media 9, jet audio (which was working fine until the 6th or 7th movie). the video can't keep up with the audio, and changing from full screen to compact will sometimes freeze the entire computer. 90% of my torrents come from iso and the feedback/comments are always excellent so i'm wondering, is my computer too slow? or old? do i have too much on my computer? (limewire, bit torrent, avast, jet audio media center, wmp, divx player). i can't run bit torrent and surf the web at the same time, if that means anything. will someone please help me out????

Watching movies has to do with CPU usage. If you start to play a movie and then hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete look at the bottom of the TaskManager window--if it is at 100% then your Cpu is maxed out and there is not much you can do except try to find a player that runs as efficiently as possible. VLC player is fairly efficient but it can only work with what you've got. If your 98 computer's processor is less than 1GHz you will have trouble with many types of movies.

On the bitorrent question if the web is too slow it is probably because you haven't limited your upload speed in your BT client. You should cap your upload at about 80-85% of your upload bandwidth. [So if you can upload at 75kBs change it to 60-65kBs] you can experiment to see at what speed your browsing slows too much to be comfortable.

If you are using Vuze/Azureus for bitorrent and your whole computer is running slow then try a client that uses less resources like utorrent(good interface and easy on RAM).

Just by the fact that you're still using Win98 tells me the PC is probably fairly old. You should also change from Avast to a different antivirus (Avast is a bit of a resource eater), or turn it off completely when doing off-line things. If you don't have at least 384-512mb you're going to run into problems too...

Most likely the movie files are fragmented. You can try to defrag your disk (be sure to turn off antivirus before you do or it will never finish).

Ouch! defragment Win98, thats like pulling teeth, it just refuses to finish and starts over everytime something accesses the hard drive. I have the defrag.exe file from ME somewhere that works with 98se but you still have to turn everything off to use it. you can probably find it with a google if you word it right.

    Code:
    http://wittswallpapers.com/MyArtic/defrag.html
Make sure you save a copy of the old one by renaming it to defrag.exe.old
Ctrl+Alt+Del EVERYTHING but Explorer, and Systray. Turn off your Virus software and THEN run Defrag.

    EndItAll2
this will shut down all but protected processes for you:
