Is it posible to have a modem, a router and a laptop with a notebook card with no pc hardwired? I have an HP Pavillion4300, running XP. Recently purchased the Belking N1 router, and card. Have DSL via Sprint with a 660 series modem ? brand.

I travel with my job and my pc is in storage. Any advice is appreciated

Yes. The router should come out of the box with no security enabled, so you should be able to connect through it and log in to its setup screen from the laptop same as you would a wired PC.

If your laptop has a network port (most do) you can connect to the router using that for the initial setup. You will need to add encryption to the wireless settings for security this will be easier to configure over a wired connection. Once it is setup you won't need the wired connection again.

If you don't have this possibility then you can do the same using the wireless connection but once you enable the encryption on the router you won't be able to access it until you set it up on the laptop too.

Having no wired connection can end up in a catch22 (http://www.ezlan.net/faq.html#onewire )
However check you Laptop, most of the newer laptops have a wire card as well. If you do have a wired NIC, get a short cat5e patch cable, and keep for a rainy day.

    Wow!
Thanks for responding to what I thought might be a dumb question. I am having alot of fun with my equipment right now. ;)

May I ask another question regarding the initial set up? I am supposed to wire my eqipment as though I have a PC and so far can't trick the system. How do I set up the router without the modem? Let me get specific, the router NEVER recognizes the computer during set up, and this program will not advance past set one.

Sorry to be a pest, I'm savvy on the PC wish I had it with me right now, cuz I am computer dumb now :)

Sincerely, Marjorie Thanks again for the adivice, will try
