Can my system handle a RAM overclock?

  1. Hi,
I have a homebuilt computer that has 191MB of sd ram pc 100. I was kinda wondering if it can handle pc 133. it has a maximum ram upgrade of 512MB. It has a 600 MhZ celeron processor. Right now according to everest and this is an average run (my pc runs 24/7) I am running 86 degrees F on the mobo and 68 in the actual cpu. I was wondering if i can push it to 133 clock on the ram useing the current setup it has now which is a cpu fan running about 4500 rpm. Can my system handle it?

  2. If the current setup is not sufficient would a case fan allow it?

The ram wil most likely take 133Mhz but if you have no maltiplyer controle and you bunp it up to 133 your CPU will be at 800Mhz ..thares a vary good chance that it wont run stable at thows speeds ( no matter how many fans you blow on it ) try to sett a maltiplier of 4.5 ( 600Mhz @ 133FSB ) or 5X ( 667 @ 133FSB )....

  4. Ok im about to go for it i will let you know if it works.

  5. Well i tried it and the results werent too pretty. For some reason when i hooked up the chips the power supply went out. Could the ram chip have something to do with it? It was weird because before i did anything i was perpareing to turn off the pc and for some reason the system just restarted itself. I checked my thermal but the system was not overheating. Im gonna try a new power box and see what happens.

did you change the maltiplyer ???? if you dident it wont work...

  7. Well i checked it out some more and it wasnt the psu at all. In fact the wires for the power/reset switch were mixed up. Set the wires right, flipped the switch and it came right up without any problems. For the ram well i installed the chips and it seems that the BIOS automatically limited the ram clock speed to 100MhZ even though the ram was made to run 133 MhZ (PnP is the best invention for computers scince the hardrive!). So now everything seems fine right now. I installed a new psu anyway with an upgrade in power to 400Watts over 250 that it had before. It is from comp usa and it is so quiet that i dont even hear it running. Now everything is fine and i am having no problems. Thanks for the help guys. :D
