can not defrag XP pro????

hi there i cant defrag my xp sp 2? im having the error - some files on this drive can not be defragmented!! but there are no files in the " these files" tab.
ive tried doing it in save mode but still no joy.
any help would be great,

There are sections of the hard drive that are ALWAYS in use while Windows is running. This includes your registry, and your pagefile. These cannot be defragged by the built-in Windows defragmentation utility. Therefore, a third party application is required to defragment these areas. To this end, I recommend PageDefrag which will allow you to defragment these sections, as it runs before Windows has loaded. Try it out and let us know how it goes!

 

thanks mada. installed, restarted xp running the new defrag 1st. it ran ok but still having the same error when i try to defrag my c drive?? any more help please???

Hi Craigy and since this is apparently your 2nd post here: "Welcome to MajorGeeks!"

I never like the defrag utility which came with Windows XP Pro (or XP Home, for that matter). Have you ever tried using either of the freeware products called Diskeeper Lite or O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware Edition?

Both of these work well with XP Home or Pro are available in the Major Geeks “Drive Utilities” section on the Majorgeeks.com homepage.
