I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5555 running Win 8.1 and Win 10. What did you download and from where?

I just read on line that anti-malware such as MBAM may need to be temporarily disabled.

falcon and mdibah, thanks for the reply. the antivirus that
I am running is the free one provided with the rest of the
    bloatware.

I tried three different d/l and they all would not run!

BTW, not sure how to disable. I also tried to remove McAfee
from programs and it would not remove it.

I will check Falcon link and see if it works for me

    Frank you.

Falcon, tried that yesterday and today and did not work.

The antivirus software has expired and is also not working..

Just because the freeware McAfee is out of date doesn't mean it wont block things.
You need to use the OFFICIAL McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool, and you need to do as follows:

    1. Run the removal tool with no other programs running
    2. RESTART your system
    3. Run the removal tool a SECOND time
    4. Restart your system
    5. If you have a SAFE cleaner, such as CCleaner Slim, then run the cleaner, and after run its 'Registry > Scan > Fix all issues' and run it as many times as needed until a scan finds ZERO entries

You would also do well to use this tool (but only AFTER the above, not before) to get rid of unneeded bloatware: PC DeCrapifier

If you cannot download and run these tools on that system in normal boot mode, you will need to download them on a different system, save to a USB pen drive, and then run them in Windows SAFE MODE.
Accessing Safe Mode in Windows 10

NB: In your first post you say you 'just got' this system. Therefore I cannot see how McAfee has expired so quickly, unless 'just got' actually means many many months ago, or you got it second hand from the original purchaser.

Mr Turner, thank you for the instruction. Yes, got means the laptop
    in about 6 weeks old.

I will report back to you and let you know what happens.

McAfee will expire x amount of days after initial install at the factory. My Inspiron arrived the same way.

But, I did something different with my Inspiron than the OP is doing.

I haven't used, or bought a system with a free McAfee program for many many years but I always assumed it gave you use of it for longer than that time. And back then it was expiry of update that happened, not its actual use, ie it didn't just sit 'dead' on a system. But it used to be several months before expiry. Either way, it must be uninstalled cleanly to avoid system problems, that has always been the case and hasn't changed at all.
Plus there are better less system hogging freeware programs.
