morpheus and kazaa are THE MOST spyware ridden pieces of crap on the planet. but Ive had no problems with Limewire throughout the years. This thread will most likely get locked though because downloading music for free=illegal.

Some sites offer free trials to download music though. Napster has a trial but you cant burn the music...www.emusic.com has a 25 free song thing goin on if ya wanna check that out

I'm sure that there are some artists out there (probably who don't have contracts with big labels) who are offering free downloads of their music. I'd look at small labels and the websites of the bands you're looking for.

I suspect though that you are looking for known artists so no. The only free ones are the illegal ones, I suggest Amazon for cheap music since I rarely pay more than £5 for a CD (making it cheaper than iTunes and similar).

Let us know if you have any more specific info you're looking for and we might be able to give better advice than 'no, not legally'.

I've used Limewire, and I'd say about 80% of the music I've downloaded (legally) has been ok. Occasionally some tracks are not what they are supposed to be.
It isn't always illegal to download music off the internet. It depends on where in the world you are. In some countries for example, it you had bought a music CD but it had become damaged and unplayable, it wouldn't be illegal to download the songs from that album.

There are quite a few people and websites around who allow free downloading and use of their music. Admittedly you probably won't get anything that's in the top 40, but I've used some of this type of music and it's quite good. It depends on what you want. Some of it can even be used commercially if the artist is credited properly.

How can one download music off any p2p site legally?!? Unless it was from a site, that stated that the bands gave their music legally?

Yea i thought i read somewhere that it is legal if you already have the CD. Maybe the same concept as ROMS and emulators; if u have the game on the system then its legal to download the ROM for your computer. Someone should check up on that (not it! :p)

I appreciate that a lot of music downloads are illegal, but there are exceptions. P2P file sharing can be a useful way of sending things to other people which are too big to fit into an email. I'm currently involved in making a film. It's the first time I've done anything like this, and an old friend of mine has been doing some music for it. Mostly he's been sending music via email, as it was track at a time, but last month, he wanted to send me a whole CD's worth, which would have been too big to fit into an email. So he temporarily put it into his Limewire shared folder, gave it an obscure name that hopefully wouldn't have been of interest to anyone else, and I downloaded it. Once I'd got it, I let him know and he removed it.
I reckon the same method will come in handy when I need to send him bits of video footage without having to compress them so much that they are grainy and unwatchable.

On a similar note, just for a laugh, I once made a joke video clip, and as an experiment to see how many people I could get to download it, I gave it the name, Charlotte Church, hardcore. Hopefully it didn't cause disappointment for too many people.

I use BearShare, it does come with spybot but can easily be deleted, also Limewire although when getting Halloween sounds for my grandchildren some porn clip slipped in and I had a time getting rid of it. It took on the name of songs I already had but could pick them out because they were all seconds in length.
