HP laptop (older) G62 Worked perfect until when last used seemed like machine was warmer than normal (but maybe imagined)
    Turned off normally.
Couple days later turned on --- black screen flashing CAPs lock & the wifi light is orange. Can hear machine went to internet tried variety of power on, no battery..etc...Then the Towel...well.. it worked..let it cool over night turn on & computer fired up. did a scan that Norton wanted. Had to use different wifi access.
Great then shut it off.. Tried to start next day Dead again (same problem Caps Lock flashing
Now do the "towel" turn on heat up.... Turn off for couple of days & Hurrah works....Right now I'm getting things transferred. It's been great, Have done the moving the Cards inside, unhooked the hard drive & partner doesn't want to mess with the motherboard. Is there hope for this machine?

Information for anyone reading the above post. The HP G62 is a budget laptop that came out in 2011.

You need to explain this. I've been using computers since the 70's and haven't a clue what you mean by "do the towel".

Ok, Yes, it's an older computer, but have windows 10 and has been good until the Caps Lock flashing & not booting up. In searching the internet abt . this issue - tried all the "normal stuff" changing the ram, There were a couple suggestions of covering the air vent on the computer after you turn it on (leave the cover for abt an hr. (yes I thought it was crazy too). Shut the power off removed the cover from the "vent" area and let it sit. It fired up the next time. - Internet comments sometimes the solder comes lose and this causes a problem (something that shouldn't come loose does. This was from more than one source I found this. Before I wasn't able to run the BIOS as couldn't boot up. To run BIOS seems I'd have to restart - actually afraid to shut down. Not sure what the BIOS would tell me.

The "warm up" is a dead giveaway. Microfractures in the board solder. There were a lot of HPs that had this problem. As I understand it, it was the alloy which caused the issue. And yes, solder can "come apart" with enough heat cycles. You could try to re-flow the board in an oven. Lots of resources out there. It might be fun since it's nearly done in anyway. I also recommend a nice day with plenty of ventilation.

Well, get it nice and warm, and have a USB stick at the ready. Believe it or not, legacy machines are becoming collector's items. Especially for people who want to run old programs and games on original hardware. Maybe on a tube tv. Now I have to look and see how many are left out there for sale, lol...

Will Update on a separate thread. The laptop is now at least "now" operational. Everything of importance is off it. and can use it to post on facebook for an organization I am facebook editor. My "old" desktop with Vista & Opera doesn't seem able. Runs super slow trying to fix that. Thanks for advice.
