Can we talk about televisions?

I've been using a very old 6" black and white as my 32" color television went out last fall. I have it attached to an antenna on top of my trailer as well as a "converter box".

I am wanting a color television that I do not have to connect to any converter box as well as one that will permit me to continue to use the outside antenna.

I'd like to have a VHS as well as the ?? (CD ?) option because I have a lot of old classic movies. Some are on the old VHS tapes and some are on disc-like thingies. (Sorry, my terminology is a bit backwards too.)

I don't want a very expensive one, yet I don't want a cheap one either. I want one that will last awhile; so I can save up money to get it if need be.

Can anyone talk with me about televisions and maybe make a few suggestions (with pros and cons) as to what might serve my needs? (I have no interest in cable or satellite stuff. Only local channels are plenty for me.)

All TVs sold today have digital tuners so no need for the box. If you want a VCR to play your tapes, go to the Salvation Army or Goodwill store. No one makes VCRs anymore so your best bet is to find a good used one cheap. For your discs (DVDs I assume), you can buy a BluRay player. It will play both DVD discs and the new style BluRay movie discs.

Most TVs you'll see will be the flat TVs and you will want one with a composite input for your VCR. I can't recommend anything specific because I don't know your budget.

You have not mentioned size or anything else. As already stated, manufacturers are required to have digital tuners.

Here is a link to the FCC regarding Antennas: http://www.fcc.gov/guides/antennas-and-digital-television

We've only bought large screen tv's in the last 5 or so years...both high quality and average (for our basement). TVs are just not that expensive anymore. Our less expensive tv was bought at Walmart. They have a huge selection as do other big retailers.

Thank you both for responding. I will make some calls and see what Wal-Mart, JC Pennies and Radio Shack have to offer and what they recommend. (I am hoping to find someone who will deliver the TV and set it up so it works with my existing VHS/DVD player.)

If you don't have to have a flat screen tv and you don't want to spend much money you should ask family and friends. There are lots of people that have older tvs and vcrs they would like to give away. Places like the Salvation Army and Goodwill sell them cheep also.

You can also check the "free" section of Craigslist. I've seen many working TVs on there free for the taking.

There are adapters that go on the CTV jack on the back that gives you the two wire leads for an outside antenna.

Thanks to all of you for helping.

I am taking the two (2) units I have (both play VHS and DVD) down with all the connections I have to Radio Shack...unless someone can suggest a different place to take them. I want to find out if they still work!

I am thinking I will take them down to the store that sells televisions and tell them about my "outside antenna" and ask if them can suggest a new television (not needing a converter box) that will work with one or both of these...I think these are called VCR units.

The oldest unit is a Sony. It has 2 slots to place my movies into. One slot is for DVD "Progressive Scan" and the other is for VHS "HI-FI Stereo. At the bottom it states "DVD Player/Video cassette recorder SLV-D350P"

The other is a Magnovox. It has 2 slots to place my movies into. One is VHS HQ 4 head hi-fi stereo" and the other is DVD Recorder/VCR ZV427MG9

I am hoping one of these still work and I can play both my VHS movies as well as the DVD movies after I purchase the correct television.

If you see anything wrong with this plan and/or have suggestions, please feel free to let me knw. I do so value the information I get in here.

If either are functional, they will play your tapes and DVDs. You will need to make sure that your new TV has proper inputs for your DVD/VCR combo.
