can xp run in stand alone system (i.e. NO internet)?

    ok i'm kinda old fashion, still running 98se on most of my systems. 95 on some, & yes DOS .
    got a garage sale system with xp-pro on it ripped out the HD put in a new 300g & on to win98...
    Dang hardware that i wanted to install ONLY works with XP..
    ok sooo can XP run forever or has MS fixed it to "phone home" and crash is it gets no answer ?

    Well, XP does require that the product is activated after installation, but this is a one-time only deal.

    It does NOT require internet access, although that is the most common method of activation, it can be activated by phone as well.

    I don't quite understand your question. XP is an operating system, just as 98 is, and is just a newer version with added security and different versions of what you have on 98. It will not "call home" and it will certainly operate without an internet connection. Hope this helps!

    XP was bad for "phoning home" when Microsoft was pushing out the Genuine Advantage Notification tool to XP machines. This would check the legitimacy of XP at every boot, and send that information "back home" to Microsoft.

    Microsoft isn't pushing this tool out anymore, however, so it is not a big deal.
