This should have gone into the Linux Forums as there are experts in Ubuntu there that could better inform you if the Ubuntu/Windows configuration is possible and how to go about it.

I can tell you for sure, it CAN be done, but beyond that, I can't give you details.

Done all the time. Distrowatch.org has a lot of info on the different Linux projects. Redhat server is the main one used for running corporate networks.

Right now Cloud is the big thing for corporate networks, vs. using conventional ways that we have done stuff in the past. Here is the big book for Redhat that will tell you everything you need to know https://access.redhat.com/site/docu...x/6/html/Identity_Management_Guide/index.html More information here https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/

Yes, using Samba - Windows SMB - server message block, known as "Microsoft Windows Network" before the subsequent introduction of Active Directory..
    Anyways check this out..

foogoo, they are not asking about file sharing, they are asking about using the Linux system for Domain Control, vs. Microsoft Sharepoint, Exchange & Windows Server. As for SMB, all Microsoft did, was adapt Samba as a part of the later editions Windows, now known as CIFS. They actually stole it from Barry Feigenbaum, originally called BAF after him, and ran on UNIX and OS/2, when he worked for IBM http://cs.nmu.edu/~randy/Classes/CS442/Notes/SMB.html

There is a lot of Linux code embedded into the Windows OS, along with GNU, that people do not realize. As for Active Directory, it is starting to show its age, due to proprietary, does not play well with Linux, Unix, Mac OS Server, without third party "Man in the Middle" software.

There really is not much more that Microsoft can squeeze out of ADDS at this point.

thanks a lot for all the information! Its been a great help, Ive been fixing computers for about 4 years now and ive just reccently bought a franchise but i know nothin about windows server, active directory or building corporate networks. I have some understanding, i know how routers n switches work, i know abit about ip addresses and configuration, but its all the software that gets me. What is better and easier to work with, windows server or ubuntu server? Also for a business client if there pc's are say rougly 3years old and they want to upgrade the OS to win 7, would i suggest they get new pc's? or just upgrade the existing?

That would depend on the PC hardware. If the PC can properly support windows 7, then I would suggest upgrade.

Newer hardware, it is getting hard to find to support Linux, due to UEFI. I have had only one time that my Toshiba Satellite was able to boot into Ubuntu 13.04, and after that have not had any lucky. Even Linux Mint will not boot into the OS. Done everything from turning off Secure boot, to changing to AHCI for the SSD.

Only way to do Linux, is getting away from hardware that is Windows 8 only. As for the upgrading, Linux due to it is the fact that you are not purchasing the next update, it is just a apt-get Upgrade in Command window, to pull the new upgrade, if the OS does not do it itself.

The hard part about ADDS, is the whole Tree & Forest stuff, due to I have found that our LAN coordinators at work, do not have a clue, when I even mention that stuff to them, or ask if the problem we are having, is due to a Managed switch or Blade server going out.

Cisco has a lot of good info about networking Blujay, on their site.

um, I believe the OP was asking an unrelated issue about whether or not to upgrade a 3 year old PC to Windows 7, not about upgrading an old pc for the server or other linux.;)

But thanks for the tip, networking is not my forte, though I have some experience doing home networks.:)

Just wanted to let them know as a FYI Blujay, that newer hardware is getting harder to load Linux on, due to UEFI. We can all thank Microsoft for this disaster.

This has been great :) Whats UEFI? Do you know a good website or websites that can teach me how to setup a small server for a business client? I was going to install windows server 2008 R2 onto my PC at home and try and learn that way, which version of windows server should i be learning? I have done a lot of work at big corporations as a sub contractor and most of them seem to be running server 2008 R2. Say if a business has 5 stores, with 5 - 10 PC's in each store, would they have a server in every store? or one central server that all the workstations at all the stores would connect to?

This wiki page will explain UEFI.

All the info has been given in the links posted, how to setup a server in place of WS 2k8. There are some projects already made, that you just install, it walks you through what you want your domain name to be, then you go in and setup shares, etc..

Helps to also have a pfSense box for handling DHCP and DNS for this lab.
