I am re-installing XP Home on a computer that is a couple of years old. I backed up my data, and the used the install disk to boot & format the disk, and install the setup files. This all went ok, and at this point the process asks you to reboot. When it reboots I see the Bios screen ok, one text screen after that, and then the screen goes black and nothing. The monitor is using the DVI-D input. Could that be the problem, and I need to use an analog monitor to get started?

    Any and all suggestions appreciated,

    Ron

Is the xp disk a oem disk or a retail version

I believe the XP Home SP-2 is an OEM version. It comes with a sticker which has the install key. I bought it when I got the motherboard (ASUS P5B-DX), and processor (Intel E4300).

I tried an old CRT monitor on it and the same problem exists. Here is the part I did not complicate the first post with. Shortly after I put this thing together the PS2 keyboard port died. By then I had a USB wireless and all was good, except I could no longer get into the BIOS. Don't think the USB drivers load when the BIOS entry window is open, so the USB keyboard is dead at that point. Next problem is that I had set up the BIOS so C: drive boots first. And since my C: is still bootable, I can't get the XP install disk in the CD drive to boot. I thought I had solved that by unplugging the power to the C: drive until the BIOS screen came up, then quickly plugging it back in again. It seemed to have worked as the XP disk booted and the install started. It also found my C: drive, and formatted it, then put the initial set of install files on it. Then as explained it goes dead after the BIOS screen on reboot.

I'm now thinking my cute trick can't work. If BIOS realizes C: is dead then it must not be recording it as a good drive. The strange part is that XP Setup does find it and seems to recognise it.

If I could figure out how to format C: to make it not bootable, then I think I would be ok. Anyone know how to do that? I have a copy of W2K on floppies, but I don't think it will boot from A: either. The other option and probably the best one is to buy a new motherboard -- but $200 to get the same one again.

Having a PS2 keyboard would certainly help. Are you sure the port is bad and not your PS2 keyboard?

Yes, I tried a couple of different keyboards with no luck. This has been a problem from he**. I bought a new P5B Deluxe MB and it was a dud. Got my money back and since it was the last one the had, I had to research a new board. Decided on the Gigabyte EP45-UD3R. All went well. Installed all drivers and updated XP to SP3. Then today I decided to replace the original F3 bios with the latest version F7 today. Now it won't even get to the boot screen. Ugggg. I have always updated my ASUS boards with no problems, but this appears to be a very bad thing to do with the Gigabyte. I suspect it has a compatibility problem with my E4300.

Could try leaving the disk in the drive, let the machine boot up, click on My Computer, select your CD drive and select Autoplay.
