Can you help my neighbor?

Hi All!

My neighbor just wandered in with her malfunctioning laptop (Gateway 400 Notebook, running Win XP home).
She’s not too sure what happened, but is now getting the message on start:

“STOP: c0000218 (Registry File Failure) The Registry can not load the hive (File)
\SYSTEM ROOT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable”

“Beginning dump of physical memory” Contact Admin for support.

She has all the original disc’s but, you guessed it; NO Back-up disc. She is a realtor and will lose valuable info if I just re-format.

Any ideas or help greatly appreciated,

I'm probably to late, but.......

Or, the recovery console instead.

When the option to ask for the administrator password comes up, press ENTER.

If this works, then simply, copy the file...

rather yet, type in:

copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config (press enter)

exit (reboots the machine)
