Can you use your TV Remote to Control Media Player?

Is it possible to use a TV Remote to control a Media Player on your PC. I use a TV as a Computer Monitor.

    I am running Windows 7 64 Ultimate.

    Thanks :)

It's the other way around. If you have a remote for your media player, there may be a code you can enter to control your TV much like a System Remote can control a receiver, TV, Compact Disk Player, Cassette Deck, etc. My current setup has a remote that controls the cable box, TV and on/off/volume control on my receiver plus I have a remote that controls all items in my first sentence plus the cable box. Of course, not all features of any one item are controlled by either remote.

    Its a Universal TV Remote.

What a coincidence. Yesterday I watched a friend's son do exactly that. Using a remote-controlled TV connected to his PC as a monitor, he showed us photos & videos. But, it was a smart TV. If you have a smart TV, you'll have to consult the manual as the setup differs from brand to brand.

As long as it's a universal remote, there should be codes for it to control other devices.

Look for this list of codes, look for your device and brand and you may then have to check each code in turn for one that best fits your device.

I have done that and the TV works fine.

But i want to know if it is possible to use the Remote to control a Media Player on your PC.

Check the documentation for your remote or ask support. Your PC will need a IR receiver also. I have a Harmony 300 remote and a USB IR receiver.

As suggested by Just Playin, you'll need an IR receiver. If your PC doesn't have one (most don't) buy a USB IR reciever. You'll need the IR port remote code. Check the documentation or ask the retailer. Once you have the code, you need to enter Setup on your TV remote and enter the code.
