Sounds like you have a problem with your Windows XP install on boot-up, and your right there will be missing registry files. The best thing to do is a Repair Install from your windows cd, if your like alot of others you do not have the install cd's. In that case I would restore your computer back to a date prior to your problems with system restore you know run/type msconfig/launch system restore. Good Luck and post back if this helps or fails Sorry, were are my manners WELCOME TO MAJOR GEEKS

Check your bios and make sure that the virus protection is turned off in the mbr section ...it will stop you from loading an os ....
Then you can boot with cd in drive, choose install, f8 to agree, then it will look for previous installed versions and when it finds xp, will prompt if you want to repair (R) or install new ...choose R ...will look like new install, but will leave all files and porgrams intact ....the one think that is problematic, is if you have a virus issue, it will remain ....

Download and run #12 lefthand side EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP here, http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

Try what Tim has said, or you can go into safe mode and do the same thing, and remember what Tim said about repair install if you do a new install you will lose data. Then if you are still missing the registry item Steve was listing go back and follow his advise.Just take it slow and steady, and if you do not know ask, please don't just quess and click Remember we have all been were your at now. So just keep posting and your problem will be solved

how can i boot in safe mode

Right after you turn on power tap F8 key repeatedly till the Safe Mode screen comes up then follow the directions.

  17. theefool

    theefool Geekified

As in you can't save the file, or you can save the file, and the association .reg is not recognized?

  18. Bladesofhalo

    Bladesofhalo MajorGeek

If tapping F8 doesnt work then try the following step:
    Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

Watch your PC screen when you boot up. You will get a brief view on screen during boot, saying "F2, F3, or another, for safe boot, which you have to quickly press...
