HP Pavillion (beats audio ) DV7-4020SA laptop.
AMD Phenom ll P820 triple core 1.8Ghz
    4GB Ram running Windows7 Home premium 64bit

Following problem with video playback issues I reinstalled GRU adaptor drivers for both the graphics cards after which the laptop booted to a black screen .

Tried to do a restore but Laptop just hangs on the restore page with revolving cursor for hours .

Tried to enter BIOS but the BIOS screen instantly freezes and no keyboard key will work.

Did several hard resets and got the thing booted ,reinstalled graphics drivers
Had to adjust time and date and uninstall Explorer.Exe and reinstall to get my taskbar icons back.

have to do hard reset every time I switch off so I'm apprehensive to switch it off now .!

Why can I not do a restore and why does the BIOS freeze and lockup?

    Hi

Does Windows not allow you do a system restore to a point when this was not happening? if you can start system restore and it hangs or errors do let us know as much info as possible on what error messages or effects on screen if observed.

If you can also run from an elevated (click start and in the start search box type cmd and when it lists right click and choose Run as Administrator) command CMD prompt and then type chkdsk /r and hit enter and see if any issues are found with the HDD.

Have you had any malware issues recently?

Hi David sorry for the delay in responding. Thank you for your help.

I tried running chkdsk and I had to run as an adminstrator as you suggested.

This is the message I got and I had closed everything the second time I tried to run it but same message .

for the benefit of anyone finding this thread in future here is the solution that I found worked for me. Hope you get a better response than I didrolleyes

Go to Modern UI screen and type in “Regedit” and press Enter
Then go to file –> Export –> Under Export range make sure you choose “All”
    Then click on Save.

Start type ‘regedit’ right click and select ‘run as administrator’
    Go to the following location
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – > SYSTEM = > CurrentControlSet – > Control – > SessionManager
In the right side window you’ll find BootExecute
    Right-click and click on ‘Modify’
Remove all the values from it and replace it with autocheck autochk * which is the default value.
Then click OK and exit the Registry Editor. reboot
