    hi all,

    w2k pro sp4

i seem to have a problem downloading my o/s updates, i get the update icon in my system tray but its stuck at 0%, i shut the update proccess down with task manager and click start > windows updates - nothing happens
i open internet explorer and click on tools > windows updates, IE finds the page but locks up, i have to shut it down with task manager,
i go to windows updates via google and the same thing happens

i tried using dial-a-fix and finally got to the update page but could not download anything due to a file not being registered, i went through the registering part but it failed,
just in case - i re-booted and tried again and got the same messages as before (i also noticed that my lan connection icon had gone, went to network and dial-up connections, all the icons had gone from there too, went to internet options > connections, no settings and everything grayed out)
used my erunt registry back-up to restore the previous days registry, re-booted and everything is back - including the update problem,

any ideas how to fix this,
    ta

I don't have a solution for the broken update but I do have a work around until you can get it fixed.
Go to the catalog and download one update
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=windows 2000
to see if this works properly.

If you click on the column, "last updated", twice, you will have the updates sorted from newest to oldest.
When you go to download an update, you may be asked to download something to check if your system is legitimate. It reads some things on your hard drive, then you will get an alphanumeric string that you copy and post on the download page. You will only have to do this for the first download. If you return in another session for more downloads, you will probably have to go through the procedure again. (I clean my computer so some of the info gets wiped).
