Well im really stumped on this...

The OS is windows XP home

A friends PC wont load the OS. It POSTs but as soon as it reaches the stage where it wants to load the OS it hangs with no error messages and just a blank black screen.

I managed to sort it a few days ago by doing a chkdsk in recovery console but this time it has returned and i cant make any difference at all.

The HDD is listed in the BIOS and chkdsk completes with no reported errors as far as i can see. Chkdsk did report some errors when it fixed the first time around but i have no clue exactly what it was.

I tried rebuilding the OS list via the bootcfg command, again no change

As a last resort I tried rewriting the mbr, again no change.

I can boot up windows installation via CD-ROM and access the recovery console but i cant get into windows at all!

    Any help much appreciated!

Have you tried a Repair Install off the CD?

Insert your windows xp home disc, and boot to it. Then choose the repair option.
