"Cannot connect", major issues with DSL

I am living at a friend's house at the moment, and I have had access to the internet by connecting my PC to their hub via Cat-5 cable. For about two weeks, everything worked perfectly fine. However, just recently I get a message that says "Cannot connect", and the packets I recieve have been less than 3 total.
I have tried everything from checking my cable for physicall damage, to restarting the hub (pulling the power plug), to configuring a static I.P. (I.P. address, default gateway, etc.), to using some patch that edited the TCPIP.sys file. I haven't tried any of the Microsoft "fix-its" because apparently (not suprisingly) they haven't worked for the majority of people. My last resort is to uninstall Service Pack 2, because apparently the problem is from that.
My friend's computer isn't having any problems connecting, and the only thing that they did while I was gone was try to download an update (but failed).

Any help is greatly appreciated, as this is driving me crazy.

    Thanks

I have seen a problem like this - it was a very strange one but it sounds similar. Try running the Winsock Fix available from Major Geeks.

I'm away from the house right now, but as soon as I get back I'll try the Winsock Fix.

Yes, we're pretty much roommates, but they never download anything. They're hardly even on their computer (maybe twice a day for an hour total to check e-mail).

Thanks for the help, I'll reply as soon as I get a chance to try the Winsock fix!

I would say he's on a bit more than you think for him to end up here looking for a way to "creatively" solve HIS Problem. When you do get home please don't hurt each other

Ah, when I said "they are basically my room mates" I wasn't referring to the guy in that post. I was just simply stating that the people I'm trying to share the connection with are my basically my room mates, hehe.

Well, I tried the winsock fix, to no avail. In fact, I don't even see a difference. And, I did try it with an automatic I.P. configuration, and a static after the fix.

This is really starting to get to me!

    Please help!
