    (I am semi-computer-literate - I use to be a student asst sysadmin for the campus unix machine... but that was millenia ago.)

    So this thread is about my not knowing how to connect a unix box to the internet. IOW, everything is working. This machine was connected to the internet back when I was a student asst sysadmin. I had email, etc.

    Recently I inherited a G4. My friend came over and connected the G4 without leaving the chair. So I dusted off my hp-ux and said I'll try this on my own. Several days later (and several pages of HP-UX 11.x SysAdmin "How to" Book) I still don't have the machine connected to the internet.

    The machine is running HP-UX 11.00, and I am using a 4-port LinkSys router to connect to the internet.

    I set its IP and name in /etc/hosts, tried SAM, tried command line commands, et. al. and still nothing ... I don't know where to go from here. So any help pointing me in the right direction would be great.

    I dont know much about HP-UX, but it sounds like mainly Unix, take a look at your /etc/rc.conf and add something like the following for a static IP address

    fconfig_rl0="inet 192.168.2.25 netmask 255.255.255.0" \
    defaultrouter="192.168.2.100"

    or for DHCP

    ifconfig_rl0="DHCP"
