    Hello, Majors.

I have a not so old Inspiron 1750 running Windows 7. I'm using Netgear Wireless N 150 router connected to the big fat Comcast modem. The PC I'm on now is working fine, so I don't think those are the issues.

I cannot connect wirelessly or hardwired. Strangely, the wireless signal is barely one bar even with the notebook right next to the router. Weird.

In short, I can't access MGTools or anything else through the internet.
This might be a big "duh," but it's been a LONG morning. Where do I start?

    Thanks,
    7

    Hi, 7.

    First things I'd try:

    1. Reload drivers (chipset, ethernet, etc.).

    2. Run an IP flush, then an IP config.

Done. Worked like a dream. Thank you, Caliban! Your time is appreciated.:major:major
Any thoughts about the wireless signal being so weak? It's crazy pathetic.

That is strange. Maybe an incompatibility between the Inspiron's ethernet protocol and the Netgear?
Had a similar problem recently with an old Compaq - we solved it by installing a USB wireless N adapter. Something to think about.

I don't think it could be that. It was working like a dream until it wasn't.

Have you tried rebooting both the modem and the router, just for s&g?

That was the first thing I did.

Is the 'wired' signal strength noticeably stronger than the 'wireless'?
If so, you might consider grabbing any disassembly manuals offered for that model, pulling a cover or two, and making sure the antenna is secure. Most laptops have a small length of antenna wire threaded throughout the case.

It was actually dropped a bit ago. That's a fine idea. I'll get on it.

Hey! Things get dropped all the time - the world is an imperfect place. It's fine. I didn't drop it down a flight of stairs.

Caliban: In re the wireless. It's definitely not my antenna wire. It works fine elsewhere - strong signals fast downloads. I have reset both the modem and router twice now, so I'm at a loss. Perhaps the modem is a cheapie. I'm going to try to get Comcast to spare a few pennies and send me a new one. In the mean time, I'm wired at home.

@aimvideo If you think dropping things is funny you should see me with my 50' ethernet cable going around the house. :major

    :-D:-D:-D

Good enough - sounds like a modem/router upgrade might do the trick.

Good luck - keep us posted. :major
