    Hello.

I recently moved and connected my pc via wi-fi, under Linux, to the new network without any difficulty.

But when trying to connect my laptop under Vista 32 bit, via wi-fi, all I can achieve is Local Access.

    Any advice appreciated.

I'm not a networking guru so my advice might not be accurate.
I see two problems comparing your settings to what I see on my wifi connected netbook

MY ISP appears here where yours is blank.

My computers have DHCP enabled so the router can assign each an IP.

    Thank you for responding.

I tried this some time ago, but without success.

I cannot make any adjustments to the router because it is not mine and not under my control. In any event, I connected with my pc under Linux without a problem

It's not a DHCP issue - the adapter has an IP address so I assume you have assigned it a fixed address? But might it be a firewall issue? Is Core Networking allowed in the firewall?

The laptop, under Vista and wi-fi:

    IP is set for automatic
I have flushed the DNS cache
The firewall is set to allow Core Networking.

I can still only connect locally.

The pc under Linux and wi-fi:

The pc connects with the router and internet without a problem

We have a contradiction here - system says DHCP is off yet the adapter has somehow acquired an IP address 192.168.1.7. When an adapter's IP settings are on automatic that is theoretically impossible. As I don't have a Vista system I can experiment with I don't think I'll be able to help - sorry.

I have tried, but still have the local connection only problem.

The LAN would like a network cable fitted, I use wi-fi should this cable is unnecessary. However, I plugged a cable into the socket, I could not plug the other end into the router, I do no have access to the device. After plugging in the cable, there was still a problem.

I know that the router is working, so I must be able to connect to it. At my previous address, I had no such problem.

You can ignore the message about the cable but if it's bothering you just disable the the Realtek LAN adapter in Device Manager or in Network and Sharing Center. It is not relevant to your problem with your wireless connection. Have you asked the owner of the router about this problem? You need a wireless access password to connect wirelessly (but not when using a cable). Is the router requesting this password?

    The router is working well

I was given the router password and used it when I tried to set up wi-fi. The owner says there should be no problem. That is my experience when connecting my Linux desktop (no problem at all).

I even disabled the firewall to see if that made a difference, it did not (no back on).

I have watched the many YouTube videos on the problem and have tried the solutions, to no avail.

I inherited the laptop and have no installation disks, so even re-installation is not an option.

Maybe another network manager?. I would have to download this using my Linux system and then install it on the Vista laptop.

I wonder if there is a factory re-set option somewhere?

    Best wishes for Christmas

From reading about your Satellite there is - or at least there was a recovery partition and THIS tells you how to invoke it. So as long as no one has removed the recovery partition you do have the option to restore the laptop to factory. You obviously need to think long and hard whether you want to go down that road as you have a long haul ahead of you saving all your own stuff and then reinstalling and updating everything. Might be easier just to move again ;)

Am I right in assuming you are living in a multi-occupancy building? If so there will be others using the same router and if you have network discovery turned on they can all see your computer and may, depending on other settings you are using, be able to access some of your files. You wouldn't want that and that is why I had to contradict Eldon's advice.

From #21 it sounds as if your computer is seeing the network created by the router as a public network which, if I'm right about the multi-occupancy, would be the proper way to treat it. But what is this private network you are seeing and can connect to? Is there another router in range which the owner has left unprotected?

I see from the new ipconfig that DHCP is now showing as on! That explains your laptop having an IP address but leaves me mystified as to who changed what.

Excellent article HERE about public and private networks.

The building I am living in has another person in residence - they control the router. Looks like discovery needs to be turned off.

Remember, the private network disconnects and reverts after disconnection. There are other routers in range and one is unprotected.

I made the changes in an attempt to gain internet access.

If I can't sole the problem I will need to take drastic action because the laptop needs to be fully functional.

    My options appear to be:

    Revert to the factory setting and hope that solves the connection issue;

    Install one of the free Linux OS's. I already have kubuntu installed on the pc, but it might be better to have another version for variety, but the choice is considerable;

Install another wifi manager, but which one.

Best wishes, and a happy Christmas

I don't think there is a simple solution. You changed address and suddenly it isn't working. You could buy a USB wireless adapter, they aren't expensive, turn the built-in off and use that but that's about all I can suggest. Maybe Eldon or ano has an answer. Have a good Xmas :)

Why not download a Vista compatible wireless adapter and install it on the laptop (downloaded via the pc). Can you suggest one that might work?

How do I turn off the built-in adapter

The onboard wireless adapter is firmware or hardware, you can't just d/load one AFAIK. You can disable it in device manager or in network and sharing center. A plug-in one is the only alternative.

When you take the laptop to a hotspot, does it connect there?
If not, then it is something in the Windows settings to connect to a wireless network.

Have you also determined that it is not trying to connect automatically to your old address/internet connection?

Don't worry about other networks in range, even unprotected ones. My network appears as unprotected to the 2 or 3 homes that might pick up the signal but I have restricted the number of IPs it hands out and I have MAC filtering on so if someone tried to connect, they'd get a message "no working leases available".

I don't know Vista so I have to rely on Windows 7, shown in Eldon's screenshot.
In the left column, I have an entry Manage Wireless Networks. It appaers directly under Control Panel Home and above the two Change entries in Eldon's screenshot.

When I click on that it shows present and past wireless networks. At the far right it says Automatically connect.

If you see the old network connection name, highlight it and look above to the menu
Add, Remove, Move up, Adapter properties, Profile types and Network and Sharing Center.

    Remove the old entry.

If you see the current entry click on it and see what is says under connection and also security to be sure the entries are correct.

Maybe it's time to recognise that Vista officially 'dies' on April 11, 2017, though it has effectively been minimally supported for a year or three. From what I can see on the Toshiba website there are Win 7 drivers available for the Satellite L350, and as you can pick up Win 7 on auction sites for peanuts that may be your best way forward. It isn't easy for the members here to give detailed support as hardly any of us have a working Vista system we can refer to.
