    Try running:

    CHKDSK c: /r

/f is a basic chkdsk, while /r is a more thorough chkdsk. This is XP btw?

    Have you tried safemode instead?

Can you list some more information?
    1. How much free hard drive space is available?
    2. What operating system are you using?
    3. What type of file system do you have?
    4. Are you the administrator of the computer?
    5. Have you tried to defrag in Safe Mode?

From post 4, ques 1 is important because the onboard windows defrag app needs upto 1/3 of your HDD free (or ~30GB I think) to defrag properly (to sort, move and restore sys files) while some 3rd party apps will defrag needing a lot less HDD space to move and sort files. Apparently the Windows defrag app is only a barebones version and thus rather inefficient. There are some free versions on majorgeeks and you may find they are more efficient (timewise) and effective. This is coarse paraphrasing of info from langa.com. If you want more indepth info go to his homepage and type 3rd party defrag or something to that effect.

I personally use DiskeeperĀ® Lite, Executive Software International, Inc., Version: 7.0.418.0 avail from majorgeeks. Have been using it for 2-3 months and find where the Windows version used to take upto 6 hours this ver can take 6 minutes.

Firstly can you free up some memory? Either dump stuff onto a burnable CD/DVD or set up a network with another sys or transfer data via an external HDD. Another option is to compress some not necassary files via 7zip (I believe they achieve excellent compression ratio's and the app is free).

If these options are unsuitable there are 3rd party defrag programs that can use a smaller amount of HDD space to shuffle and move files but you will need to do some research. I think Diskeeper Lite may use less (it is actually 15% of HDD space that the Windows Defrag app needs, NOT 30% as previously stated). So in your case upto 1.5Gb.

Also if you don't use the hibernation feature you can turn it off through power options and save disk space equal to the amount of ram you have.
