The file is named "CA8H6RKH." It has a trailing period and I can't delete the file, move the file, or copy it. I am running Windows XP SP2 Home Edition.

The file has the system file attribute. I have tried deleting using the del "\\?\" command and also by Windows... Any ideas??

    See how this goes>

Deleting files - Access Denied Error

Just open NOTEPAD and then click on "OPEN". Navigate to the file in the little Notepad "explorer" window and right click on the file and delete it.

    OR this

Explorer.exe in XP has a bad habit of wanting to hang on to files, even when you have finished using them - therefore when you try to delete the file, XP will say "Access Denied".
This error occurs more often when working with media files - mp3, avi, mpeg etc.
    TIP:
    Close all open applications.
Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory with the offending files.
Then open the Task Manager and click on the Processes tab. select "explorer.exe" under Image Name. Click "End Process".
That will leave you with only the command prompt and the task manager running.
Now at the Command Prompt, its time to delete the file(s). Using the DEL command. Example c:>\movies\DEL movie.avi
Now the files are deleted, go to the task manager and click on the Applications tab. Click the "New Task" button. in the dialog, type explorer.exe and click OK.

For folders the command is 'rd'.

    Also try renaming the file.

Odd names like that can be a virus, trojan or spyware. Where is the file? I would do a complete scan from safe mode with an online scanner and try and delete it fromt here as well. if Hipsters plan does not work.

It didn't work because I did not get a access denied error.

I cannot virus scan it because it is not a valid Win 32 file. In addition, it is zero kilobytes... So it is a junk file left over from some faulty application.

Windows allows the creation of such files but expects the application that created it to delete it... Right now I have no idea what generated the zero byte file, and Windows (I have tried erasing in Command Prompt using the special delete function)...

I have also used Safe Mode to try to delete it... Some people suggested using Bart PE to delete such a file, but the file is not being used because it specifically says that the file...

MsgBox Title: "Error Deleteing File or Folder"
MsgBox Prompt "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk."
    MsgBox type: Critical ok

I am currently running AntiVir Personal (Free) Edition. I update virus definitions at least once a week and have had it right after installing all manufacturer's updated drivers.

The file is currently alone in a folder I renamed "useless".

Which online scanner could I use to do something like that?..

what you most likely have to do with that file/folder is to take ownership of it, sometimes the OS locks certain files/folders and can even tho they show 0kbs have much data in there... Sys Volume info folder is a case in point ( it houses the system restore files ).

instructions on how to take ownership

btw as you have XP Home you will need to do this in safe mode.
