    Good Morning,

I work as wedding photographer and save weddings into folders. After x amount of time I burn the files to disc for archival purposes and delete the folders from the hard drive. Last night I tried to delete some folders. I opened the folder, selected all the photo files for deletion, went to file to delete and the system froze up. I opened task manager and the cpu had gone to 100 percent. I tried to delete the files in safe mode and the same thing happened. The computer has Windows XP SP2, 2 gig of ram, 200 gig hardrive. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Tim for the response. I currently use CCleaner as well as Windows Doctor and a couple of other tuneup programs. There are only two items in startup( antivirus and firewall). I am fairly computer saavy so this is a head scratcher for me. One thing I failed to mention is that I have used Black Vipers list to disable and/or make manual startup for some things in services. I am wondering if one of the services I disable is causing this?

    Thanks again.

    Hi

At times some applications do keep hold of the file types that you have opened, even when you have closed the applications that opened them, can be music, video or pictures as well as general files etc

Could try booting into safe mode and trying to delete the files or folders, although that can be a pain to do all the time, so try one of the below.

    1. Pocket Killbox
    2. MoveOnBoot this one, once you dragNdrop the file or browse for its location, deletes the file on reboot, so any applications that have locked the file are not running so cannot lock it before deletion.. my fav!

Also what burning software do you have, is it new on your system, or has it had an upgrade of late?

Did this start happening after you tweaked your Services? as MarkT mentions not always a wise thing to do is to follow tweaking guides IMO as not all setups are the same so turning a service off may break software you use as a dependancy of the main service many disabled, so as mentioned to see if services are the issue set back to the default "safe" or "original" settings.

Thanks again Mark and Halo. I suspect that turning off a service may be the culprit. Also, thanks for the advice about using programs NOT recommended by Major Geeks. I will follow up to with a malware scan if restoring services does not solve the problem. BTY, Nero is the burning rom that I use.

    Thanks again!

I had an issue like this earlier today. The following is what helped me resolve my issue.

How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Manual steps to run Chkdsk from My Computer or Windows Explorer
    1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
    2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
    3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
    4. Use one of the following procedures:
    • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
The following table lists the exit codes that Chkdsk reports after it has finished:
    Exit code Description
    0 No errors were found.
1 Errors were found and fixed.
2 Disk cleanup, such as garbage collection, was performed, or cleanup was not performed because /f was not specified.
3 Could not check the disk, errors could not be fixed, or errors were not fixed because /f was not specified.

    Hi, just a quick-E

Ensure the folders haven't been set to "Read Only".
Verify this by right clicking on the folder goto the bottom of the contextual menu that opens and select properties.
At the bottom of this should show what the properties are for the folder if not one of the other tabs in this properties dialogue box should show the info.
If read only deselect..in the perfect world if thats the issue then it should be resolved.
