A buddy dropped off a computer of his that was giving him trouble, asking me to take a look at it - I've done simple quick fixes involving networking and viruses/spyware in the past. I'll admit though, anything hardware related, and I'm lost.

    Here's the specs:
    Dell Dimension 4100
    PIII ~860
    256 mb ram
    Sony CD-RW CRX215E1
    _NEC DV-5700A (Dvd)
    Crystal Soundfusion

    Windows 2000 Pro

Neither IDE drive appears in "My Computer".

In device manager, both IDE drives are flagged with the yellow exclamation mark, which delves to the "Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)" message.

There are also flags on the "Crystal Soundfusion (tm)" in the Sound, Video, and game controllers tab ("This device cannot start. (Code 10))"), as well as one on a "PCI Device" under other devices ("The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"). I have no idea what this is.

I've tried a few things listed in similar problems in the forums, such as updating drivers (though I can't be sure I've got the most recent ones). Anyone out there able to advice a hardware rookie on troubleshooting?

If your computer work again you should run scandisk to mark bad sectors. Exclamation mark that mean your computer has hardware conflicts, removed drivers then reinstall it again update newest driver if you need.

    Did that, no change.

Except that now, "Multimedia audio controller" shows up in the "other devices" tab (with a yellow exclamation mark) instead of the Crystal Soundvision in the Sound, etc tab.

Delete them in device management, and restart the computer and let windows rebuild the drivers. Also go and get the right chipset drivers. This is not a hardware problem, this is a software problem. If the drives have been changed lately, make sure they're configured correctly, Master, slave are set properly.

This software might help you out with finding what you have for hardware and the software needed.

Tried deleting and reinstalling the drivers, as well as downloading the most recent ones from online. No change. I'll try reposting this in the drivers section, which I just noticed existed. :) thanks

if you install corrected drivers and no xclamation mark but it is still not work that mean you get problem with hardware it may be bad.

No, even after I install the updated drivers, the exclamation mark remains. I'm pretty stumped. :)
