"Cannot display video mode" - error for geforce 6600

Alright, so I just reformatted computer, but didn't have disc (at the time) for my Nvidia GeForce 6600 256 mb verto, downloaded driver for it, then things went down hill.. computer crashed when running a program, smearing the colors all over the place and froze up. After reboot, static-y lines were all over, and random numbers and stuff.. not pretty, the video would then totally go out, but not freeze or crash computer. Now when I try to boot the computer with this card in it goes straight to black screen or sometimes shows "Cannot display video mode" for a few seconds, then back to black. I've read a few posts about the subject, but I cannot boot in safemode, which is popular advice, as my monitor cannot read any data from computer. I switched out the geforce for my old crappy one to post and ask for help, also I am unable to change the refresh rate on my monitor, which is another suggestion I've read.

So, summary:
-Have: windows xp and Nvidia GeForce 6600 256 mb verto
-Can't: Boot computer while using forementioned card whatsoever.
-Don't: Know how to fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, throw some words at me!

 

This is an error from your display, not the graphics card. It means the signal it is receiving from the graphics card can not be displayed as it is out of the monitor range. A too high resolution or refresh rate (if you are using an LCD monitor, always select 60Hz) is the most common cause.
If you don't see anything but that error during boot (that is right after you turn on the computer), your graphics card may be broken. Try hooking up a different monitor or moving the card to another computer to be sure.
