Please help me. I have been running Firefox for a long time with no problems. I never run IE. I began this month to have a problem with ff in that each time I loaded it it brought up the 'restore session' page., even though I have it set I think, so that it won't do that. Also last week ff nagged me to download a new version, something with a lot of space given to Google, and my address and search bars were shifted to a different area as a result. Also, I am not in love with google, and like to search via duck go duck and others as well. So I did a system restore and got back my older version of ff. The restore session page continued to come up, however, so today, hours ago, I decided to uninstall ff and do a clean install. To do the new install I had to use IE. I don't seem to be able to download FF . IE doesn't have an arrow showing download progress nor does it seem to have any progress indicator. I went to their forum, and many others were having this problem. One answer said IE showed progress in the status bar with a green line, but others couldn't see that. Not sure what the status bar is. Anyway, at this point I would be happy just to have any version of FF, though would rather not have the one with the google stuff. Version 53 maybe. I have tried over and over to download from FF official site, then from Major Geeks, as I always have had the best luck with you all. But nothing seems to work, and it is doubly hard as I can't see any download indicator. Please help . I cannot use IE. Simply find it too difficult to use for many reasons. Also I wasn't raised with computers, not very technical.

You should stick with the new Firefox (Quantum version 57) and customise it to the way you had it before which is very easy. You can specify the search engine in the same way as you always could.
In IE you can specify where it saves downloaded files or simply look at where it saves them.

I haven't actually tried. I had to reset my password for this site, and that went fine.

Windows 7, serpac1. I have 'never 10 ' app and specifically requested 7 Home premium when I bought the computer. There doesn't seem to be any place on IE that indicates downloading, usually on FF I just clicked the blue arrow in the tool bar up top of page and the download history came on and I clicked on the download I wanted and it opened, clicked 'save', ect. There is nothing like that in IE that I and evidently others, can find. And when I click download at the FF site or with you all nothing seems to happen. So I wait the 5 secs and click "click here' and nothing happens either. I have tried the control j, but something just pops up real fast then disappears.

Have you looked in your download folder?

Open Internet Explorer, select the Tools button, and then select View downloads

Tim, I already had checked the download folders on my computer and there was nothing. When you open tools in IE it says 'downloads' and next to that is control j. When I try to download something and click control j something flashes quickly on screen in the tool bars up top, then disappears. When I just open tool in IE and click control j nothing happens. Nothing has been downloaded. When I click 'view downloads' in IE-tools, nothing happens. The control-j thing only seems to activate when I have clicked on download button. Then I press it and something quickly flashes and then disappears on upper toolbars. If I haven't clicked on download, the control j doesn't do anything. Clicking on 'view download' in tools does nothing whether trying to download or not.

In the View Downloads dialog box, select Options in the lower left hand corner. Where does it say downloads are going?

There is. When you click to download anything with IE a bar appears at the very bottom of the screen asking you whether you want to run it or SAVE IT and beside the 'save it' is an arrow which you click on then choose where to save it.
It will NOT download anything unless you respond to that bar at the bottom of the screen.

Tim, should I try to download another browser, and then try to download ff from there? If you think that is something I should do, can you suggest some very light weight browser to use to get to ff?

You have said you can't download anything with IE - if that's really true (see my post above and try again but looking more carefully this time) and you have no other browser, then you can't can you?
If it is true you can't download with IE, and you have no other web browser, you can only download on a different system.

Tim, when I click on downloads in IE tools, nothing happens. No dialogue box appears. Nor does anything happen when I click control-j. When I went to IE forums, others couldn't find a way to see download progress or downloads either. Someone said there would be a green line in task bar showing download progress, but a lot of people said they only saw grey, no progress indicators, as is also the case with me.

READ post #11 above - go to Firefox website, click to DOWNLOAD IT and look at the BOTTOM of the IE screen.

Eldon, just tried to download it from MajorGeeks site. Nothing seemed to happen, and then the page went back to another page on MG, just one of your regular pages with downloads to choose from. I clicked on view downloads in IE tools during this and nothing happened. When I clicked on the keyboard shortcut, control j, something flashed on the top after I clicked on 'click here' if download doesn't start in 5secs, then nothing happened. Don't know why this is happening as I download all the times, do movies and videos, so on. Watched an Amazon tv series yesterday . Never any problems until I uninstalled ff and went to IE just until I could do a clean install of my FF, which I so want. Just checked download folders, nothing new was downloaded. This is why I hate IE, have always had problems with it. On another computer it was always getting bugs and other problems.

Do you have access to another computer? Even if it's only on the weekend?

    1. Open Internet Explorer and click the Tools menu. (gear icon on right side)
    2. Click on Internet Options, then the Security tab.
    3. Internet should be the highlighted icon. Go down and click on Custom level.
    4. Scroll down until you see Downloads. Under File download, be sure enable is selected. Under font download, you can select either enable or prompt.
    5. Click okay before you close the box.

    Now go here https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
and select Windows 64 bit or Windows 32 bit and see if it downloads.

Update, Issue solved, sort of. Thanks all for your input. I decided to do a system restore and try to get ff back that way. The first attempt failed. The system said it might be because of anti-virus. I had recently been testing various anti-virus suites to see which I preferred. A few days prior to this I had downloaded a trial of a big mean suite; if this had been a person he would have been 7 feet tall carrying an M-15 and grenades, shooting your kneecaps if you got close. But this is what I hate about these suites; they have more features than most will ever need; and often do things to your system without permission; and this one isn't the most user friendly. Took me an hour to figure out how to turn this guy off. Then I tried system restore again, and it was successful. I didn't get FF back, but I did get 2 ff stubs in my download folder, and walla, I got the whole program back from activating just that. Love FF. However, it was the newest version, with the google thing. The search bar is too small and none of the work arounds to fix it work. In the other versions you could just click and drag it to make it larger , but that doesn't work here. Since I do a lot of searches with long complex names, this isn't good. Other problems. Should I post about these here, or start a new thread?
