Cannot Download

I am running windows XP it is a compaq Presario s4020wm..

I had to do a destructive restore. "long story"

Anyhow, now I cannot seem to download anything. I have updated all the latest updates for win xp. Even took 2 days to get that to go. Now it will not let me download yahoo or anything else. It keeps telling me "install did not start correctly". Cannot seem to download anything.

I did have the W32 virus, I ran the virus removal tool and removed it. Still no luck..

Any ideas?

I am using DSL
"Do you have a firewall"
Yes but have it disabled. One of the things I was trying to download will not download with it active.
"Are you running anti Spy softwares"
No, I even tried to download that and it would not let me.
"What are your security settings in IE"
Right now they are all on medium low. I usally run medium but thought maybe that was why it would not download so changed it.

IE is not showing up in my add/remove programs, thats odd isn't it?

 

Actually, not that odd. IE has had a repair function for quite a while, but it has only functioned on a complete upgrad from one version to the next (IE: installing IE6 over IE5). Which is fine for older operating sytems, where you've upgraded to get to IE6. Unfortunately, IE6, which comes with WinXP, is the latest version, so there's nothing to upgrade to, and "repair" likely won't be available until we can upgrade to IE7, if and when. Currently, the only way I know to do a repair of IE6 in WinXP is to do a complete WinXP repair, which would be an option for you too, although it would require resetting and re-updating a lot more than just IE.

Thanks Guys for all the help. I have only tried the download on the SP1 so far. I had to leave for work .. But it was not downloading.. So I will try some of the other things when i get home tonight. I am leaving town for a couple days so if I do not get it fixed before then, I sure will let you know how it goes after i get back..
