Cannot downloaqd windows update

My os Windows xp home with IE7
A couple of days ago the windows update logo appeared on my computer advising me that updates are ready for my computer(My PC is set for automatic downloads) when i click on this logo it shows downloading and then 'Your computer has been updated" acouple of minutes later the logo reappears. On checking download history i find that this recent update 927978 has been installed on my computer 12 times, all clicked satisfactory download.
However the Windows update logo is still displayed on my desktop and apparently still downloading and installing the same update,
I have disabled automatic download, but how can i get rid of the logo??

I'd start by changing my update settings from Automatic to DIY- just remember to check in with updates at least by the 2nd week of each month and select Custom. Check the ones you want and there you go.
Personally,I don't want Windows to decide what I want to install.
You'll get a little red shield and a pop-up telling you you are at risk. Has some truth, just remember to go to updates regularly.
