Vista Home Premium 32 bit: I've gone thru the recommended steps from a vista support site, but it doesn't work. DEP is disabled by default in 32bit. I'm thinking it should be enabled. True or false?
Problem: When I right click IE - Run as Admin - I am then directed/connected to "hp-desktop.aol.com" In Advance tab under Security 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks': it's grayed out & wont allow me to check its box. Even though I've 'Run as Admin,' I can't enable. Help, please.

Is this a clean install of Vista or did you upgrade from XP?

    Clean: pre-installed at factory

    Try this:

Start > All Programs > Right Click IE7 > Run as administrator > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab, scroll down and check “Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks” > Click Apply > Click OK > Close IE7

Note if a program does not work or you're unable to start a program you will have to undo above. There have been reported issues with add-ons but I've had no issues with it enabled so far, think mine was enabled on install...don't remember ever enabling it.

Also if I go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention it is turned on and there is a note "Your computer's processor supports hardware-based DEP.

Sorry not played much in Vista OS, but think your hardware has to support this feature. There are many FAQ in Vista Help re DEP if you're curious like me.

Cat: Thanks for your suggestion. However, you left out two essential steps in getting to IE7. After 'All Programs' must go to 'Accessories' then 'System Tools'
    then right click 'IE7(No Add-ons)'
BTW there are two locations for DEP. The other resides in 'System' > 'Advanced
System Settings' > under 'Performance' > 'Settings' > 'Data Execution Prevention' tab. Two choices here: Turn on DEP for essential Win programs...'
and 'Turn on DEP for all programs & services except those I select.'

Hmm works for me...but did you get it to work for you? Is DEP on now?

Yes, it's turned on but with problems: Sys DEP: When turned on 'for all programs & services....' pages won't load, server can't be found messages.
IE DEP: IE won't load > message says DEP closed this program. :confused

Your problem is with they way you turned on DEP for IE7, "No Ad-ons" Uncheck DEP (undo what you did). I just looked closer at your previous post.

You went to the System Tools folder and used the Diagnostic version of IE7 - not what you want. Did you create a shortcut on desktop or start menu? If you created a shortcut Right Click on the IE7 (no add-ons) Is it a shortcut? if so delete it, report back.

After you have undone previous changes, start over.

There should be a listing for IE7 aka Internet Explorer in your Start "All Programs" list not a Internet Explorer (no add-ons). If not report back.

Below is for later once you work out the IE7 issue, and for other programs, not IE7, you need to fix IE7.

If you know a program is safe but not supported for DEP you can change option to "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select" (you then have to add the .exe file for the program to the exception list)

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention, "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" Click Add, then find the .exe file.

As I said prior some have problems with DEP turned on. I have download multiple programs from MGs and not had a problem running any of them with DEP enabled.

Also, if you can't follow a post, it's better to stop and ask rather than continuing down a different path...my fault I should have been paying closer attention to your prior posts.

What site? was it Microsoft themselves or a 3rd party site?

Would need to see what your attempting to do via what steps to comment as DEP if supported is enabled by default.

Halo: Here's the link to the tutorial I used: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/120778-dep-enable-disable.html
As I said in my original post, there are 2 DEP locations: 1) under 'Advanced System settings > ...System Properties >...Performance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention' tab. When enabled for all programs, "server can't be found, unable to display," etc messages. Went back to original setting to enable for essential Win programs.
    2) IE7 DEP: 'All Programs > Accessories > System Tool > right click on IE > Run as Admin > click on Tools (@ tool bar) > Internet Options > Advanced' tab under Security box for 'Enable memory protection ....' (This path was suggested by another support group.) This, too, caused problems (like my ISP's home page not loading), so I went back to undo the change. I'd like to enable the additional protection, but what can I do?
BTW, yesterday I couldn't get to the Support Forums at all, because the "Connection was reset..." although I could navigate the rest of the site:confused Is this my ISP's fault or what? Thank you for your help.
