Cannot get Epson software to recognize USB port

I have Windows Me. I downloaded the driver from the Epson website. On installation, it prompted me to connect the printer and turn it on, which I did, but the software didn't recognize it. Windows immediately found new hardware and downloaded a driver for it. So after two unsuccessful attempts from the software installation to find it, it defaulted to LPT1.

I went into the Device Manager and under Other Devices, it lists a big ? with USB Printer. I went into properties and tried to direct the driver installation to where the Epson folder was on the computer, but it said it could not find the INF file for it.

Any suggestions? I had read somewhere about removing the printer from Start printers, rebooting, going into the BIOS and disabling the parallel port, rebooting and then retrying the install because it won't have a choice then but to go to the USB port. But I have no idea how to get into the BIOS, let alone remove ports, etc. I also saw someone said they downloaded the USB driver, a small patch, and it worked no problemo, but where is such a patch?

Any help would be appreciated. Oh - the USB port - I only have 2 of them and they are beside each other. One is where my cable modem is connected and this one that the printer cable is in.

    Thanks!

Make sure that you have the file extensions showing. I know 98 and ME can be very picky about finding a file. Examine the CD and see if you can find the inf file the printer needs. If so, drag a copy to your desktop so you know exactly where it is and don't have to search through the CD again.
Go into Control Panel --> Printers and click Add Printer. Then when it gets to the driver file, change from C:\ or the DVD drive and point it to your desktop.
After you have the printer installed, if there is another icon for the Epson supposedly attached to the LPT1, highlight and remove it. Then reboot and see if you have a working printer.
