The computer was perfectly fine, NO problems at all!

Just wanted to go from win2k pro to xp pro

I formatted, and popped in the xp pro cd...

After formatting was complete it then starts to copy files..

Then it says cannot copy file gm.dls which was the first of many other files that followed...

Choose to either retry or skip, i chose retry on all of them first, some copied on retry, some didnt

Then after it couldnt copy so many of them a blue screen comes up with this...

    0x00000024 (0x00190256, 0xbfcf2b10, 0xbfcf2768, 0x8045a716) ntfs_file_system address 8045a716 base at 80400000, datestamp 3ad77869 -ntoskrni.exe

Please keep in mind there was no problems whatsoever before i decided to change the OS

    This is driving me insane!

Some guy i know had me pulling all the cards out of it.. that i didnt want to do! I may not get everything back together again if i do that!

He had me remove one stick of ram too, i havent put it back in, i probably ruined it by bothering it GRRRRR...

I tried all sorts of things but always end up stuck...

After trying a few times with the above error it then gets to a point where it just freezes on the screen where it says loading windows...

Im sorry now i formatted! I had win2k pro on it and nothing was wrong, now a great machine is sitting collecting dust!

I went and bought a new machine cuz i couldnt figure this out.. but i still would like to get it fixed (myself)

I have been ripped off too many times taking pc's to a shop!

Anyone ever have this problem? HELP~! Please...

    Does 2K reinstall fine?

If so, stay there, unless you want to get a BIOS update, or methodically narrow down the culprit. Myself, I'd wager its the BIOS not working correctly with ACPI 1.1.

Test your ram. Check out memtest86+ on the main site.

Did you try another cd drive? I had that problem once. I was able to copy the cd over to the hard drive and install the operating system from the hard drive.

I second the CD drive. I've seen many times where they seem to work well enough in Windows, but have trouble copying files during install. CD/DVD drives are very cheap these days...I'd pick-up a new one & give it a shot. Or, swap the one from your new computer.
