Since upgrading to Vista from xp, It won't let me log on to Messenger. It says:
"You cannot log on to Messenger because you are using an old version of MSN Messenger. Note: To upgrade MSN Messenger you need to log on to this computer as a local adminstrator."

I tried to upgrade but it says I can't. What does it mean 'local administrator'?
Doesn't it normally log on using administrator? It doesn't ask me when it starts up. How can I get messenger up and running?

I'm not having a good experience with Vista right now. I think my machine is too old for Windows 7.

    Found this for you :

Theres a hidden administrator account in windows vista the reason why im posting this is if people are having problems or getting annoyed with the UAC and administrator permissions this hidden account will solve this problem and get rid of them without having to turn it off manually.

This is the True Administrator account

Turning on the Administrator account is straightforward.

    1. First, open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the Search box on the Start menu, right-clicking the command prompt icon that appears at the top of the Start menu, then selecting Run as administrator

    2. Then enter this command and press Enter:

    Net user administrator /active:yes

From now on, the Administrator account will appear as an option on the Welcome screen, along with any user accounts you may have set up. Use it like any other account.

If you want to disable the account and hide it, enter this command at an elevated command prompt and press Enter:

Net user administrator /active:no which i doubt you'd want to do

Try this then try your messenger again !

Hope this helps you out !
    Good Luck Rusty ! :)

There is an another alternative and thats to, right click the MSN Messenger icon, and hit "run as administrator".
See if that works too !

It's incredible but some problems are often solved by the simplest means. I logged out (on the Start menu and when I started up the screen gave me about 3 different logons. I chose the original one and, using that, I was able to delete all the other logons. Then eventually after it finally got all the updates all done, messenger opened up fine. It took a whole week to eventually download all the updates. Every time I logged in or logged out there was always new updates to download. Now everything works as it should .... until the next problem!!!

Thanks to all for your support.
