cannot open .email attachments with msn9

Ok I was being nice and tried to fix a computer for somebody. It had all kinds of spyware and trojans on it. I did the spyware tutorial and removed everything and reinstalled MSN 9 dial-up because they could not sign on(added zone alarm free, spywareblaster, adware. It is a Dell Dimension 4100 Windows Me with all critical updates. When I received the computer it had no firewall, no spyware protection and was missing about 20 critical updates,but norton antivirus was installed. Now they can no longer look at forwarded attachments with the .email extension within msn email, but if you send attachments that are not forwarded then they can open them. There Hotmail account will open .email attachments. When I reinstalled msn 9 all there email messages were saved and there address book too so is there a way to delete everything and reinstall msn 9 or it something else wrong.
