Hello, when I try I get 'The connection has timed out' every time.Specifically the sites are www.amazon.co.uk and www.ferryhalim.com
I haven't been able to get on to ferryhalim for quite a while now and amazon for about a week.
I looked in my hosts file and it doesn't appear to be a problem there.Any help would be appreciated.thankyou.

I would try flushing your DNS cache. Click Start -> Run and type "cmd". then in the window type "ipconfig /flushdns" All without "quotes"

I've had that same problem with a few sites twice now. From Both computers in my house. It went on for a week and finally the problem was solved. I'm sure it was the ISP, its the only thing in common.

didn't try to flushdns back then, I've learned a few things since. The problem just went away after a week of fustration.

Open a command line via START->RUN->"cmd" (no quotes)

Type "ping <affected website>", for example, "ping www.ferryhalim.com" (no quotes), let us know what happens.

In my experience, stuff like this is usually resolved by a powercycle of the network (Turn off/power down all computers, modems, routers, etc for 5 minutes or so, turn them back in, and test)

    Best of luck! :)

Hello.Thankyou very much.I tried that but it said:
    "Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.

    Ping statistics for 72.29.80.39:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)"

It did this for both sites
The pc is turned off when not in use usually so turning it off then back on doesn't help.

    OK, try this:

    Start->run:cmd (and enter)

In the command line: type "netsh winsock reset"

(you should get a "...completed successfully..." message.)

    Reboot and test.

If that fails, tap F8 while you computer starts up, choose "safe mode with networking", and see if you can get on-line in that mode. If you can, see if you can get to the problem sites.

No that didn't work and I couldn't get online in "safe mode with networking":(

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager. Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall the Network Settings; Log to this page, it have a lot of links to instructions for Windows Network Installation - http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

    how do I do that?

Basically, if there is an "off" switch, turn it off.

If not, unplug the power cord from the wall/power bar.

wait 5 minutes, plug it back in.

Do the same thing with any routers or other networking hardware between your computer and the wall.

Make sure the computer is turned off while you do this.

Let me know if I am not explaining this well. :)

Lain, what kind of firewall, or other security software do you have? Have you tried temporarily disabling the firewall (etc.) and testing? (turn them back on as soon as you test).

Also, do you have a router? Have you tried bypassing it?

Just a few thoughts. This is a tough one! :)

Re: Firewall - if you are able to browse to other websites with no problem, a firewall is probably not an issue. Are you able to browse to any websites at this time?

If you are using more than one computer to connect to your internet connection, you are using a router. Also, if you have a wireless connection, you are using a router. If either are the case, you're set up would be modem-to-router-to-computer. Gecks is suggesting to go directly from modem-computer.

I was not able to ping amazon.co.uk either. However, I was able to browse to the site by IP address (87.238.81.129). Try putting http://87.238.81.129 in your Firefox address bar.
